I slid the window open Greg. Not fogged up but leaded and could use a hose on the outside. Well the skiers are
happy with the weather, headed to Whistler & the local mountains as nicely shown by Henry.

This morning, when I was walking in to the building where I work, one of my colleagues remarked that I was obviously from the eastern US, since the temperature was 10 degrees C (50 degrees F) and (like him) I was wearing a short-sleeved shirt - unlike others, who were all wearing jackets. He happens to be from Buffalo, New York, which has a reputation for snow and cold weather, so I asked him if he missed the winter weather in Buffalo.

His reply was, "22 foot (6.6 meters) high snow drifts around your home? Yeah - I really, really miss that experience!"

Ah that's ok then, and yes the ice is a menace, I went for a trip down south once with some others, (archery competition) and the car windshield wipers and washer had trouble with the ice in the morning, it was a hire car, I wasn't driving though. The next morning we scraped it off first, having been forwarned. We all came from the tropics, what did we know about ice?

We had rain last night, beating heavily and noisily against the window glass all night long accompanied by a whistling, mysterious-sounding wind.

Result; Cottonball clouds during the day that hovered above us with interesting compositions, creating good backdrops to the cityscape.

Sparrows bathed in the puddles of rainwater on the streets...

The construction for the new Naval Museum with its ever moving cranes and rectilinear form, on the European coast of Bosphorus looked more interesting for the curvelinear clouds in the sky...

And the waves kept beating the banks of the Bosphorus, expecting more rain any moment...I even got wet with the spray of a giant wave hitting the concrete banks.. : ) It felt good!

Very nice all three Yildiz. Birds seem happy with their puddle, I really like # 3 with the waves splashing the seawall



Took this in the morning around 11am. Crow putting up with the weather, just 100' away on the street lamp.

That was a good time to go for a photographic walk Yildiz after the rain, nice clear atmospherics even though the clouds were stll around. Looks like the tide was in in the last shot, I like them all, the cranes are good too, they aren't as easy to photograph as one thinks they might be.

Ohhh...I can feel the pain and hear the cry of that crow, David Antony! Good choice of B&W and love the ice that's hanging down the lamp...adds more edge and conveys how cold it actually is out there.

You're right, I had to wait and watch the cranes to get them in the same frame and in action too. : ))
And I wish I had a faster lens to capture the mood of the birds in that moment; they really acted fast and the water splashes could have taken a more frozen-in-midair look for it.

You got some good shots of the Sparrows Yildiz don't worry about that, they must have let you get quite close using an 80mm lens. The Sparrow population is on the increase here again i notice; there's a few more of them around the yard and getting their share when I toss some birdseed on the concrete path. The City Council here occasionally does a population reduction program on Sparrows (and Mynah birds) they say they affect the population of native finches...I don't know if they do or not personally, I didn't notice any increase of the latter when they did it the last time. We used to have Zebra finches http://birdsinbackyards.net/species/Taeniopygia-guttatanesting in a giant pine tree, but the termites killed the tree so I haven't seen any around since, (they were the reason I started feeding the birds in the first place), the Sparrows didn't seem to affect them while the tree was still there.

Winter is coming here quickly - Cramlington, Northumberland -3 degC 6- 8 inches of snow

We still had some apples in the garden when the snow arrived

Zebra Finch is a beautiful and interesting bird; very colourful and more spectacular than a common sparrow for sure.
Like you, Greg, I don't think the sparrows can do that much harm to the population of other small-sized birds. I think it's more about what the environment, natural surroundings and the weather can provide for their actual existence in a certain area or zone. Nicely preserved natural habitats will certainly induce the growth of any nice bird like the Zebra Finches, like small fresh water tanks, lakes or natural water reservoirs...

Look at the way my street fresh water spa sparrows are happily having a ball in a tiny pool of rain water and it's no guessing game that any larger fresh water reservoir with a number of different tree plant species will attract more interesting 'aviators' for our everyday viewing!

I'm more than grateful for the lovely snowy shots and seeing the familiar colourful beach huts trapped between a white blanket and a grey curtain of sky is most striking; or more like Christmas candy huts for winter wizards... : ) Can definitely make the cover of David's Photoworld magazine, yet again! : ))

Love the 'sugar powder sprinkled' apples hanging down waiting to be picked soon...
And a fine spot to photograph the symmetrical stop/wait traffic lights.

I like the sense of intense isolation from any signs of living creatures...even the fully functional traffic lights which are out there for the living folks, which probably are indoors somewhere and can't be seen in your photo...
