Re: Roman Wall
Yep, the whole thing is another departmental boondoggle that is smothered under layers of self inflicted/conflicting bureaucratic inertia, meanwhile the only function of the remote settlements and outposts seems too revolve around booze and continuing access to booze, the really bad part is even though schools and teachers are provided in these places the attendance historically has been abysmal and has never been enforced adequately, (due partly/mostly too claimed cultural sensitivities) thus they continue to produce many in each generation, after generation, of brain damaged (booze and petrol sniffing) illiterates.
Another offshoot that has really bad consequences (since the court ruling on land rights) is the perceived massive inconvenience too landowners, (cattle and sheep) true or false, of reporting something of possible cultural significance, I have heard that nowdays if a landowner stumbles over something while building a boundary road or fence....it's nothing that a D9G can't fix.

Re: Roman Wall
No problems with extra pics Birma, nice to see others tread the same paths.
Here are a couple more, these are old 7D pics
First one looking across Housesteads, from near the actual wall itself

Second walking westwards along the wall from Housesteads towards Steel Rigg (the area in the original post)

I dislike the pen-pushers as much as the next man (I work in the NHS and if ever an organisation could do with less administrators its that) but I still think it is quite reasonable to restrict the use of land held in trust for the nation for commercial gain unless some of that gain returns to the organisation. I also don't think the NT are doing themselves huge favours being so restrictive in who can submit to the picture library - I've been having a browse and there are a lot of images there that don't exactly set the world on fire as far as inspirational photography goes, if they opened up their contributor list they might be surprised at what they would get.
Anyhow I'm primarily here to share pictures and locations so lets see some more
Cheers

Re: Roman Wall
Good ones Paul,
Yesterday, I was looking at the photos of these remnants of the Roman buildings built along the Roman Wall on the Internet and they were all smaller in size and less perfect. You were fortunate to have the dramatic clouds that day which add an extra dimension sky-wise. Good to see the raised floors of the housesteads where warm air used to circulate so sharply and in good light.
I saw one photo that looked very much like your second photo, maybe the owner in fact is you but I browsed through many on-line sources and one was the National Trust and something about the British Heritage so I suppose that the phot was from a similar angle and doesn't belong to you...
I like your versions better because they include more of people's activities like painting and animals' activities like sheep showing their newborns around.

Re: Roman Wall
How old are these walls?
I'll have to see if I can get some pics of the "great" 200 year old dry stone walls in my area, these walls where so important they wanted to change the path of a new freeway even though no one can prove how old the walls are, farmers have been pulling down and building these walls (fences) for Hmm 200 years.
I don't know about the rest of Australia but in Melbourne it seems the moment something , anything, is over 100 years old it must be protected. I knew someone that had a trust listed house, they could not even paint a door with out getting premission and trust inspectors could come on site any time. In the end he sold the place was sick of spending $10,000 in legal fees/court costs every time changed a door knob ( or so he said

Re: Roman Wall
The walls are approx 1900 years old.
Built during the time of Emporer Hadrian in AD182 to mark the Northern edhe of the Roman Empire.
The wall is a UNESCO world heritage site and large sections of the wall still remain, although originally it was much higher.

I'm fairly ignorant of the rights of photographers as they've been discussed here, so I'll just talk about the pretty pictures. These are nice shots, Paul, the latest especially, but there are a certain amount of HDR artifacts that are very distracting. The last is definitely the best though, with a strong composition and brilliant colors. Your processing techniques really shine in that shot.

Re: Roman Wall
Good one Murph, I've wondered what the wall actually looked like since school history, looks like it wouldn't have afforded much protection for the Romans from those unruly Celts...as it is now, that is.
