The shots look good, I'm often surprised how people (judging by various forums) are scared to shoot high ISO, I've been hitting ISO 3200 for years with various cameras, though I would limit the 6mp and 10mp CCD ones to 1600 (things fall apart after that). You will get noise at high ISO all the APS-C cameras in recent times are capable of a good ISO 3200 image, subject to decent processing, 6400 is pushing things though you can get ok results if you are careful.

Maybe my film background has made me more resistant to noise/grain

I don't get it either, although it does depend on what you shoot, how and in what lighting conditions.

My a580 has a reputation for good high ISO performance. I shoot close-ups of birda with it. As you might know, feathers have a very fine structure which I want to be able to see and which is pretty much impossible above ISO 800. The closer you get, the higher you can go.

For everything else I'll even use ISO 6400 which, with some carefull editting, can provide reasonable results.
