ps. Finally managed to get myself a Spangled Drongo but not the greatest, the angle upwards was too steep so you cant see the metallic sheen on the back...but you cant win em all.

Nice bird Greg. I had no idea that 'Drongo' was a bird, I though it was just a mild form of abuse . On reflexion, I understand that 'Galah' is used in much the same way?

Thanks Birma and Yildiz, those were the good old days I think when one called someone a drongo, or a Galah, I think they use more colourful adjectives these days. And yes the Drongo is one of those birds that are a delight to have around, always doing something, singing, foraging for grasshoppers or performing some high speed manoeuvres.

For the first time, I went out birding today. It wasn't the best of days, it was cold with a lot of mist with less than 50 meters sight. However, coping with the weather was well worth it, as I never thought I would find the illusive common kingfisher. Guess what: I did today
It was a magical moment for me!

Not bad for a first time out with the 70-400G on my a580. All were handheld!

Common Kingfisher found! He/she was waiting for some unsuspecting fish in the water below it.

Found lots of European Robins

Finally caught a Wren on camera. These lovely little birds are fast and hard to see in the overgrowth!


Found a Blue Tit eating off the berries in this tree


This Chiffinch was hunting something only it could see.

You have done well Mark, thats the most bird species I’ve seen someone on this site get on a day out in a European location, and most would be quite difficult to get close enough too also.

Hi Mark, well done on tracking down the Kingfisher. I particularly like the Wren and Chaffinch shots, nice details and poses with some of their surroundings in the shot as well.

Yildiz, it is Gustav Kiburg (ijsvogel) you're talking about. He became on of the few testing the a77 and now he owns one and taking awesome shots (as always) on different subjects. He's mainly on Dyxum.com
BTW, he is a very friendly, modest and wonderful person.
