Weather in Istanbul: Sunny right now and -2°C


Hi;

Been snowing in Istanbul for 3 days and may still keep it up for a couple of days...
Here are a few shots from this morning.

Wow ! We got global warming problem... Just -39℃ compare to normal temperatures in Winnipeg -20℃.

Indeed, Valery, compared to your low temperatures we have significantly warmer winter over here. And -39℃ is the lowest I heard of still. I hope everyone's safe and have access to good, nutritious food as well.
The lakes and streams around Winnipeg must be covered with thick crystalline ice that a person can easily walk on then...
Loved your previous ice/snow covered waterfalls and lakes.

I did not know that it snows in Istanbul. Learned something new. Is this annual affair or an exception, Yildiz?
Last time I was at a place in snow is 2012. So I don't have any new ones to post.

Hi, Sury;

Yes, it does snow in Istanbul annually starting off with late October and we have night/day blizzards which lowers the temperatures to around -12°C or lower as well. Last night and this morning were two of such occasions. Not a single soul was outside and nothing could be seen even at close proximity. That's why my photos above from this morning have bluish tint and not so crispy sharp: the air appeared bluish misty. Later in the the afternoon the sun appeared and cleared the view to a sharper and clear appearance.

Any photos from 2012? From a family outing/holiday maybe?

That would be from my trip to Alaska. I should have some photos from a family trip to Lake Tahoe prior to that. Let me dig into my archives
and post them.

The glacier expert guide that came along for the ride with the touring bunch of you explorers, perhaps?

I like the panoramic shot -# 2- of the area very much, Sury. Neat capture. Well done!

Thank you.
This is the entrance to EXIT glacier national park. The reason I am showing this is that from this point there is about a two mile
hike to see the glacier (called EXIT). I did not realize the significance or I would have taken some shots of the sign boards starting
at this entrance showing a 4 digit number since 1800s. That turned out to be the year in which the glacier was at that point. It has been
receding around 160 feet per year since 2010. Since they started marking the glacier has receding about two miles or so as you can see
from the photos below.
Not withstanding my personal views on the climate change, this is a visual reminder of the impact of the climate change. If humans are
causing it, or the Nature is taking its course or a combination thereof is a moot point. The impact is real.

Glaciers are a big part of the air cooling system of planet Earth and naturally witnessing them recede at this rate is worth exploring. The type of landscape that started to show from the already glacier-barren areas is pretty rocky and reminds of the times Earth's mantle was going under some serious geological changes...
