Btw these are two different photos, I didn't just clone out the gull in the first one.

Without.
The gull is not sharp and does not help the balance of the other objects.

Another vote for "without the gull". It just doesn't seem to fit with the moon and plane in this shot, but I do like the idea of the three things "in flight".

One more for "without". The one "with" doesn't work for me.

The problem is that the gull is flying out of the picture.

That's very true. Coming in usually looks better.

Thanks for all the comments - I'd say the winner is the pic without the gull. That one was actually an accident :D the gull wasn't supposed to fly into the picture just when I pressed the trigger. But try to explain them!

I like it better with the gull. I don't feel it's unbalanced ... to the contrary, the gull and airplane heading into different directions make it work for me. Great shot!

That said, the picture without gull is nice, too. I am trying to get a shot exactly like that for years now, but no success yet. I guess my telephoto lens shys the planes away.

Another option to consider would be modifying the picture a bit, moving the gull to where it might work better:
gull.jpg
Of course, this is only reasonable as long as the picture is treated essentially like a painting: an attractive composition rather than a literal or accurate representation of reality. I'd also add a disclaimer that I'm not sure this is really the "right" place for the gull, nor am I convinced that it's necessarily a positive element at all -- just presenting the possibility of a third option for consideration.

actually I like that one a lot with the moved gull. I guess the flying out of the frame has a lot of impact and I think you picked the perfect place for him to go...

No, definitely not! This re-composed image does not work at all; instead, it now looks like an arbitrary collection of unconnected items. The original composition works just fine; I am surprised that I am obviously the only one who likes it ...
