Sad neglect, but with the fallen leaf mould, mud and rain and the contrasty light the tones worked well. Most of the gravestones have superb inscriptions on them, sometimes highlighted by skimmed sun for just a few minutes each day. This one had just the single word, MEMORY, showing. Nothing else, all worn away or buried.
Alpha 900, 28-105mm RS lens at 75mm, 1/60th at f/6.3 Aperture priority, ISO 200, -1.3 exposure correction set, SSS on (of course), raw conversion is a dead match for the JPEG not adjusted. There have been some comments that the Alpha 900 exposure is not as expected, but with all my shots (at least at ISO 200) I find it is exactly what you would expect. I do not use the Intelligent Preview, bracket or chimp shots to adjust - in this case, -1.3 was the factor I would have expected to set with film or digital alike for this subject and a TTL meter reading. It proved to be just right for the histogram as well as visually.

I have taken photos at cemeteries in many places over the years. I recall that in California about 15 years ago on the wall of one of my guest rooms I had an 11x14 inch print of an interesting Japanese headstone taken at a strange angle with a 20mm lens. I thought the photo was pretty cool. From time to time I had Japanese friends visiting from Japan and often one of them would stay in that room. Finally, tactfully one of them asked me why that photo was on the wall because in Japan it is considered a rather bad omen to have something related to death in the house.
