I would guess negative film? Scanning using the Dimage 5400/II with Digital ICE/GEM can improve most negs from that date, and might make the sky free from the white dots.

It's an interesting historical record but I would not be surprised if the same engine is not pulling the same train today!

You could well be right. Yes it was scanned from negative using a Minolta Scan Dual III (2840). I now also have an Epson Perfection 4870 with Digital Ice so maybe I'll give it another try. Interestingly (for me at any rate) I had few beans to rub together when I took this (and many others) in India in '82 and could only afford 3" x 2" prints from the local shop. Needless to say they were terrible so I filed them away in dismay and forgot all about them until four or five years ago when I scanned a few and found that many were far better than I had realised. I wonder how many others have dismissed photographs on the basis of inadequate original processing.

A day on I'm not really sure why I posted the train pic - not a great photo nor a great scan. The two here are better in both regards I think. The musician has been taken from another old scan. For the crowd scene I have taken David's advice and used Digital ICE (with an Epson Perfection 4870 flatbed scanner) and I must say the scan quality is pretty good -certainly much better than the dedicated 35mm Scan Dual III.

The quality and the colour are certainly much better all round, the Epson has done a good job for web resolution use anyway.

Is it a purplish-blueish tint on the last shot, or is it me seeing colors?
