Hi,

I was strolling on the banks/docks of the Bosphorus Strait yesterday where I live in Istanbul and there were ever-changing lighting and weather in play. I would appreciate the critical views on colours or things that seem oddly unfitting...

Hi Yildiz,
Yes I agree they look dramatic with the darkish clouds, sort of menacing even, an interesting look at your part of the world...one thing that looks a little odd is the yellowish effect of the sky right on the horizon with the sun so high in the sky, but you were there and only you would know if that much yellow tone is out of place or not....

Nice ones, I think the colours transport very well the mood and, esp. in Nr 1, the threating storm and downpoor. While looking, I was immediately reaching for my umbrella I would have experimented with a few more angle of views or focal lengths, to give each photo a center of interest (like focusing more on the departing ship in pic 1). But then I was not there and you might had to rush to get that boat onto the photo at all

Bossel, I had my umbrella hanging on my sleeve all the while I took these photos. It actually was raining where the clouds are the darkest but it never reached the spot where I was standing, so I was left with taking photos only. There was a very chilling strong wind and I had to lean on a lamp pole to stand still. Those dark clouds were moved away by the strong wind within 10 minutes and we were left with a bluish sky afterwards.

You're both right about your analyses on the first and the second photos.
In the first photo we're looking towards the West horizon which starts colourizing around 2pm and in the photos this is emphasized as the dirty yellowish glow/lining in the west horizon. The glow exists in all the photos I took except as time passed the clouds were moved to the North and the yellow tones made less of an impact on the overall scene.

Composing was difficult because I was using the CZ 16-80mm. 16mm just wasn't wide enough to take the whole scene in. I had to make decisions of which part of the scenery could be omitted. And the boats manouvered fast as you noted Bossel.

Greg, the fishing rod actually belonged to a gentleman who soon after I took the photo caught a couple of small fish. I took phootos of those moments too but I don't know if I should send them to the forum. He was pretty lucky with the fish.

Here's an other photo where we're looking on toward the South-Western skyline and you'll see the lighter shade of yellow glow still...taken about 5 minutes after the first photo.
The sky in Istanbul can produce these enigmatic colours as a result of the weather even if momentarily.. The skyline in the Eastern section of the city was blue while I was taking these few.

Thank you Dr. Harout. I like the first one better too. I was just in time to catch the clouds, the boat and the rather greenish waters in time. They were no longer the same after 15 minutes.

I'm not sure about 'great' Dr. Harout!
The fish are rather smallish considering the season. What I'm more concerned about is exposing someone I don't know to the world... But I suppose it shouldn't do any harm. He was a very understanding gentleman.. (all fingers crossed! )

I'll go and see what I can do...

ps. Tonight at 23:00 hours local time, we have a football match on tv between Spainish and Turkish national teams. I hope you don't mind if I submit the photos a bit late.

My congratulations go to the Spanish National Football team. They played neatly last night and won the match by 1-0.

Here are the photos of the fishing rod's owner. The fish are rather tiny so I hope they are still visible!
Dr. Harout, sorry about being so late to upload the images. We have the elections today and I had to go and fulfill my voting duty.

I left the distortions untouched, maybe I'll fix them later.
