Fun with macro: shallow DOF

For last few days I was wandering here and there with my macro lens (Minolta 100mm f/2.
trying to learn how to effectively use shallow DOF.
#1 Green bokeh abstract
#2 "If I'll hold still this guy will go away..."

Yes, the ladybug is cool, but No1 appeals to my artistic side for some reason, haven't the slightest idea why though.

I saw a post on DpR about the
Diagonal method and have been comparin photos too it ever since. The first 2 images fall under this priciple pretty clearly and I thing it makes a huge diference for composition. Because if you notice they both sort of break the "rule of thirds" theory and I think if they did folow it they would be somehow diminished.

Yes, I think that rule of thirds thing that is blindly adhered too, sometimes is either obvious or gratuitous somehow. It seems too work ok if there is a primary subject displaced from the center and a secondary subject either in focus or not quite in focus as well, but with a primary subject just put off center and nothing else in the frame seems too me a bit odd...just my personal opinion of course.

These are lovely! They make a great series with their simple compositions and brilliant colors, and they're pretty spectacular as standalone images as well. Very well done! I think two and three are my favorites, as their points of focus are more dramatic.

Hi Hawk,
Good abstracts and macros in 2 and 3. I find the 'thorn' more inspiring and dramatic because of the actual form and structure and linear texture lines. It is very inspirational as an architectural structure...just imagine it at a gigantic scale, well above human scale and maybe you'll see what I mean. I also took many thorn photos in the past for the sake of its structural inspiration...
I also like the ladybugged macro, though I would love to see her/his head and mouth details in better light but I like the plain grey background against the bright reds and blacks.
Macro away!...and maybe more structures that inspire will appear.
