This morning there was a Great Blue Heron by the pond behind the house.

My apologies for the (lack of) technical quality -- I wasn't entirely awake yet!

Thanks -- but your shots (especially the first) are clearly a LOT better -- very nice indeed.

To be fair I was less then 200' from the heron, plus it was standing very still.
Most of my in flight heron shots are not worth posting :^) that No.2 shot is about the best
I took of one flying.

Oh definitely -- I find it particularly interesting to see different people's takes on similar subjects. Of course getting closer helps -- for many (most?) bird shots, getting close enough for a decent shot is most of the trick. I'd love to get within 200' of this heron, but for some strange reason, he (she?) doesn't seem to like that idea so well, at least so far...

He's definitely shy, but I finally got a shot from somewhat closer -- and the water was calm enough to give quite a nice reflection as well:



Now I just have to convince my wife that if I had a 70-400G, this would be a lot better still!

That is something you really need, for your health's sake. That should definitely go as a prescription and do show this to your wife

Thanks Doc! I'll definitely let her know it's crucial for my health. Come to think of it, maybe they made it silver for the health benefits, right?

Here's a local Edinburgh Heron caught a few days ago with the Sony 500mm f8 mirror lens on a Sony A350, ISO 200 1/640th sec, camera on monopod.

Can't get that close to Kelso heron - they are pretty canny about standing across 100 feet of Tweed, or in the middle of jungle-overgrown bits of the Teviot just before it runs into the Junction Pool. I guess that is Water of Leith?

Wow -- now that's impressive, at least to me. I've spent hours at it, and never gotten nearly that close. Regardless of the patience involved, it's a very nice shot -- the detail is superb.

I was lucky to have my camera ready when I saw this Heron from my car. I got out of he car and had some shots, this is one of them.
