It has been awhile since I posted any photos so here are 3 from Saturday. Over the weekend the annual Longboard Classic surfing competition was held at Waikiki so I was wandering around taking photos. Of course, there are always lots of people down at the beach, but this weekend more than usual, especially lots more local people than usual. I didn't take any surfing photos since the surfers are pretty far offshore and it isn't all that interesting to me anyway. Some photographers with 600mm f4 and 500mm f4 lenses though on APS-C DSLRs. I think some of them were from surfing magazines. In the winter you can go to the North Shore and photograph surfers on the big winter waves and don't need really long lenses. On the A700 250-400mm is enough.

Interesting pictures as always Henry. I especially like the colour with B&W treatment on the last shot. Very neatly executed.

I think I should go back and do his skin also and not just his swimming suit though.

Here's another one from this weekend. I think this one would work well too if I did the two people in the foreground. It would separate them, especially the woman's arm and hand on the left side, from the background better. What do you think?

I may have one or two more somewhere from years past. I'll have to take a look.

I decided to go back and redo the B&W photo above. How does this look? I like it better because it gives more separation from the rather cluttered background.

It is pretty easy to do. There are several ways to do it, but probably the easiest way is this:

1. Load your color image into your photo editor (Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Paint Shop Pro, etc.).

2. Duplicate the layer.

3. Convert the top layer to b&w. There are several ways to do this too. Of course, you can just desaturate or use the channel mixer to have more control. Now you have the top layer in b&w and the bottom layer in color.

4. Use the eraser tool to carefully erase the parts of the b&w image you want to be in color. When you do this the color layer on the bottom will show through.

5. When you are finished erasing you can flatten the image.

Of course, after step 2 you can also do other things if you want such as adjusting curves, etc. separately and differently for each layer.
