From time to time I go to Koko Head Crater and then go inside to take photos. My wife likes to go there to shoot plumeria photos so usually while she is doing that I hike for awhile. A couple of days ago I wasn't in the mood to shoot so I only took a hand full of shots. Here are three:

I like the first mono shot with all of the interweaving branches (roots?), but the colour in the 3rd is may favourite topped off with the dropplets of water.

Yes, those are roots on the ground of the Banyan tree. It rained a bit while we were there for a few minutes so by the time I got back to where my wife was shooting plumeria they all had raindrops on them. I had my macro lens on so shot a few handheld wide open or close to wide open to get minimal dof. Tough to get the portion I wanted in focus since the very slightest movement would change the plane of focus.

Yeah, Koko Head is over in Hawaii Kai so not so far by bus from Waikiki. Here is a photo from the air of Koko Head on the right and Hanauma Bay on the left:

Very, very nice trees Bakubo.

I especially liked the last one with the lovely doves which only make the tree's appearance more interesting, almost like a drawing / illustration out of a fairy tale or an epic story book.

I agree with Yildiz - there is something almost surreal / mysterious about the picture with the doves, and it suggests many questions - e.g. what does the note pinned to the tree say? what are the doves doing there? Great stuff Henry.

That is a famous old Banyan tree in front of Kuhio Beach. Here are a couple more older photos:





And here is a photo of the tree stitched from 15 photos made with the digicam I always keep in my pocket. This is not meant as a great photo or anything. I was just playing around and wanted to see what Autostitch would do with a bunch of photos that weren't carefully aligned or thought out.

I was down at the beach this morning and since you were curious I thought I would take a photo so you can see what it says. Actually, it is far enough away that I couldn't read it so I didn't know what was on it either. This is zoomed to 250mm on the A700 and then cropped a bit. I almost hate to spoil the mystery.

And here is an enormous Banyan tree's roots hanging over the side of a cliff in Waimea Valley on the North Shore:



My recollection is that the rock face with all the roots you see there is about 30 feet high.

It is not half as mysterious anymore Thanks for the background. A great example of how B&W, and isolating the detail, totally changes the mood etc.

The stiched picture looks pretty good to me. Those trees are just amazing.

B&W really worked like magic for that photo but I still like the latter coloured photos also. Nice work!

There are Banyan trees all over the place here in Hawaii. This particular one isn't the largest either. And here are some more in Thailand:

Yes, I like the b&w much better too. Since there were some comments about the Banyan tree I just thought I would show some color photos of them.
