Atmosphere

Unread post by KevinBarrett »

I stepped out of my hospital just in time for a breathtaking sunset with cumulus piling itself deep all around to the south and east. I frantically tried to capture it in 24 frames for panoramic stitch, but in my hurry forgot to lock exposure and focus. The pano-stitch was rubbish, and littered with light poles, but after shooting for that I managed to take these of the mounting heads through the maze of posts and neighboring hospitals.

Hi Kevin,

Those are indeed very nice! I like the first for the different colour layers while the second has a magnificent 'ripened-mushroom' look.

Good catch.

The atmosphere must be in a generously moody state for the whole of the world right now because the cloud formations and the wonderful colours we see around here from one second to the next are really beautiful and striking in forms as well: I see 'feathers', whirlpools, blobs and what nots playing with the sun's rays while going down...Time of the year I guess.

Thanks for sharing,
Yildiz

I think the panorama would have been great. From the pics you posted one can only guess it must have been a very impressive sight!

Hey Kevin. #1 is fantastic... I would have loved to see a pano of the clouds as they were beautiful last night!

Impressive Kevin, I'm not totally positive but they look like thunderheads, something that pilots try and avoid, can be quite nasty inside....planes have been known to fly in one side and not re-appear on the other side...

Thanks guys! The first, which somebody in another photo community likened to Maxfield Parish's style, was directly south. The second was directly east, over the more heavily polluted Dallas area and a minute or so later in its sunset. I wish I'd caught the last one a moment or two earlier before it was mostly red.

Yes, these were definitely becoming thunderheads. They pass right over my area quite frequently due to western air hitting the gulf coast air. They often erupt right over us because the huge Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex area adds heat to them. They were more like cumulonimbus than cumulus when I shot them, and had grown to full anvil status by the time I got home. About ten minutes after I shot these, the southerly one started to produce visible lighting within itself in the still blue sky...quite startling! It reminded me that we live at the bottom of a temperamental ocean of air.
