Heh! I should post Shirley's pic of a chimpanzee in Gran Canaria (an animal rescue zoo) enjoying a can of pop through the bars with the help of a girl who should have known she was breaking all the rules. Though caged, I often think that monkeys and apes get as much out of visitors as we do out of them, and the best enclosures I have seen have not always been the 'natural environment' ones. I have seen very happy and prolifically breeding families at places like the Tenerife Monkey Park (Los Christianos, the tiny conservation and breeding zoo which is avoided by the taxi drivers who will deny it even exists and try to take you to Loro Parque or Las Aiguilas).

If anyone visits Tenerife, this little zoo is by far the best for photographers because you can enter the sequence of large cages with lemurs and squirrel monkeys, and get covered in lemur poo while concentrating on using the camera. Shirley loves it because nothing beats having four lemurs sitting on your shoulders and arms, though last time she was bitten by a squirrel monkey being too inquisitive. Their parrot tried to eat my hat which now has a beak-shaped hole in the top.

Ref the Microsoft Expression Media diversion elsewhere here - I was able to find these two in seconds from our entire collection: Mentioned shot by Shirley (she was using an 18-250mm lens, I think I had the 70-300mm G on the camera and no chance of getting it, so I almost pulled Shirley over as this girl leaned to the chimp, and she reacted fast enough to get the shot - this did not last very long at all, especially when the girl realised she had been photographed). And this is a shot of mine, of Shirley; she likes to make contact with zoo inmates when conditions allow. We do also have a few shots of caged faces, prominent bars etc, but oddly enough none of these have ever sold.

Thomas, I strongly agree with Gustav and also add that it may be used as a political picture too. After all, we are all kind of behind bars
David, the hands shot is superb, beautiful and very striking. It reminds me of Diane Fossey, Jane Goodall et al.

Thanks all - I still didn't make up my mind. On one side, we enjoy meeting all these animals and many zoos do a difficult job in preserving those species that we nearly managed to extinguish. On the other hand, all animals should be free. Would we all feel for these animals and understand the importance to protect them if we had never seen them?
