Three castles

Today I’ve chosen photos of three different castles to share with you. I must say that they aren’t as good as they could. First two were taken during my very first trip with Sony a200 DSLR on June 2008. Back then I was more than total beginner and if I managed to get some good shots it was pure luck. Third picture was taken on March 2009 as sample shot after buying Tamron 200-400mm lens so it isn’t anything special either. I just wanted to share these places with you no matter if photos are technically good or bad. Hope you’ll like them.

#1 Czorsztyn Castle. I’ve already posted one shot of it 3 months ago and I’ll probably keep posting them at least once per year. I’m visiting Czorsztyn and Niedzica every summer, but I don’t take lots of shots during these trips (or it would be pointless to visit them next year )



#2 Niedzica Castle. Its clearly visible that some parts were completly reconstructed. Those aren’t ruins anymore…



#3 Rytro Castle. About 30 kilometers from my home yet I’ve never had time to visit it. Maybe because from outside it doesn’t look as promising as previous two castles.

Hi Hawk - it is interesting to see and be able to compare three such buildings. They all seem to be in easily defendable positions. They all look to have lived long and "interesting" lives.

Too often defended, and too often taken, I think. No country should envy the history of Poland, as far as division, occupation, external and internal war goes (is one of these castles in Poland - or Hungary?). They are not too unlike old British castles, I guess fortification is much the same depending on local materials in all parts of Europe.

Interesting just the same, a castle always makes the statement that this area is 'my' place, but I guess in reality a castle on top of a hill means being cut off...you hold out only as long as the supplies last, and all the opposition has to do basically is, set up camp and wait, the impatient ones like the Khans (Mongols) probably didn't wait for long.

All three castles are located in Poland of course. First two in opossite sides of Czorsztyn Lake, just few steps from border with Slovakia. Third in Rytro, about 50 km from Czorsztyn.

Castles are always one of my favorites things to see, whether in person or in pictures. Having spent most of my travels in the Western hemisphere, I never got to see as many as I wanted to. I did get to see a few in Germany and some ancient iterations on my Holy Land tour, but never had a chance to see any in France or Poland on my trips there. I did get into the Kremlin in '92, which is really just a large castle/fortress. Since it was brand new to be able to freely go into it at that time, it was quite a thrill.

Someday I would love to do a tour of the castles of the UK and Ireland. Or all of Europe! Better check that lottery ticket..... Nope, Not this time.
