Kaki (persimmon) hanging out to dry in the sun

Yesterday I noticed that hanging outside the window of the 2nd floor bedroom that my wife and I are sleeping in at her parent's house in Japan there were some kaki (persimmon) hanging out to dry in the sun. My right arm and shoulder is hurting right now so I didn't really feel like getting my camera out, opening the window, and taking a photo, but I went ahead and did it. This morning (New Year's Day) about 10:30 I happened to go to the window to look and I thought I might take another photo. They were gone! Her mother had come up first thing this morning and collected them. Glad I took a few shots yesterday! Anyway, not a great photo, but here are the kaki:

Hmm reading about persimmons, from the description it seems it looks like a tomato and tastes like an apricot...I wonder why they dry them, probably a bit gooey when ripe I guess.

That's a common thing we have with the Japanese.
We dry them too, also other fruits, just to have them all year round.
And believe me, they are quite tasty, specially the apricot.

Glad to hear you are safely back in Japan Henry, but sorry to hear that your shoulder and arm are still painful. Probably worth getting it checked out if it is getting worse rather than better.

Interesting picture - I love dried apricots (we normally get Turkish ones in the shops here) but I've not heard of persimmon before. Something to look out for in the more excotic food retailers here.

Kaki and mikan are two of my favorite fruits in Japan. I usually eat one or more of them everyday when I am here. Kaki are often seen hanging out to dry in the fall and I am sure I have taken other photos of them, but I just did a quick check of my website and I don't see that I have any others posted. Anyway, here are some photos of kaki not out to dry:

Interesting Henry, they do look good, I like sun dried or dehydrated fruits & vegetables . Have seen them in the markets here but never tried any, will buy some next time. Nice photos in the baskets and mikan on the tree.

We have them wild here in Virginia, these are two tree ripened ones that made dessert that day.

And they make a very fine wine! I just helped a friend gather persimmons for wine a month ago. The yeast are doing their work as we type.
