Not sharp enough, but great shot.

I'd be pretty happy if I had caught that.

Grrr, you got a good eye! Many people do not recognize it at this image size . You are correct, it is not very sharp .

Have a look at the photo of one sitting on a hand rail. As you can see from the reflection of mine in the eye of the bird the focus is OK. But you will also notice that there is very little texture on the body. The feathers give you almost evenly colored, washed out areas. And, DOF is shallow, it does not cover the wing in the lower left corner.

I wish the original photo had the sharpness of the one below. The one below is a 100% crop from RAW (exported as JPEG) of a similar but different picture. Unfortunately, if you do not crop it, it will show a terrible background. Too noisy? Well, if I driver there after work, there is not much light left.

However, next year, next chance - happy (photo) shooting!

Great shot doesn't mean it should always be sharp. Some shots are great just because having some level of blur. So I still remain on my position that it's a great shot (and a good catch too).

I think the lack of sharpness actually helps in this case. It appears to show a bird in motion. Kind of smoothed the details in a way that looks like it's flying.
