I don't think bokeh is important in this picture -as important as it can be in different situations.

Well, it was Minolta 50/1.7 with one set of extension tubes

I didn't mean the image was bad or ugly. What I meant to say is that in that picture, the lens that created the Bokeh is not that relevant because at that distance and F-stop, any lens will have a "decent" Bokeh.
In the West, Bokeh is a trend (same as f64 since Eduard Weston) and it is just an element that make a photograph beautiful.

In Hawk's picture, Bokeh is not a plus (as I told you before, at that distance you'll have it anyway) but composition is right and the light create the great mood that make it beautiful.

A very insightful and useful way of looking at closeups. I have deleted many a shot of similar nature, never paying attention to the mood aspect of it. Thank you.

After many years "in the industry" the only thing that is 100% clear for me is that the difference between a "shot" and a good photograph is emotion.
