Something unusual for me. It could have gone into the street people thread without the crop.
I liked the crop in terms of showing the despair and futility of his existence. Homeless
man on University Avenue, Berkeley, California, USA.

Homeless ...Yes, it's hurtful to look at.

Very sad, brilliant photo all the same Sury.

There but for the grace of....that photo is pertinent for the times I think Sury, looks like the world economy has a slight case of the wobbles again, it's all a bit of a worry, I just hope that guy isn't a portent of the future...and yes I agree, it's a good shot.

I have a moral dilemma with shooting "homeless" people. Especially if there is the potential to make money off the photograph. Do you give compensation (put money in their cup)? Is that even fair given their situation and mine? Am I taking advantage of their situation for my personal gain? What do you do about "model release forms"? Is it fair to put the images up on the web without their consent?

I think that the homeless are a compelling subjects and something that it is difficult to look at for a lot of folks, but I have refrained from taking these shots because I haven't come to any conclusions about the questions above and many others that relate to this subject matter.

Treat them the same as you would any street shot. You can't use the photo commercially w/o a model release, but do you get model releases for the people you shoot on the street? I don't.

As to "street people", I never give money. I will take them out to lunch, but too many reek of alcohol for me to do that.

You can't use people in a "product shoot" without a release form, but you can use them in photojournalist style without a release....
