Hi,

I processed a number of the photos that made it safely to my computer after my 16Gb Memory Stick had some problems.

They are rather randomly but chronologically listed, from the moment I climbed aboard the tallship Dar Mlodziezy (Poland). It's a beautiful tallship which has a very nice crew and captain, much like Mir (Russia) which means 'peace' in Russian and has already won the first two legs of the race. They are the A class tallships of the regatta and are spectacular, inside, on deck and from the outside.

As soon as I was on the deck, I was surprised to find how close and nice the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque looked in the distance. I proceeded on the aisle and came upon all those that made this ship a sailing one. They are so colourful, shiny and neat that it felt like a playground for grown ups. Centuries ago, people of Istanbul probably were used to seeing this sight. A little ahead was a scene that brought back memories of movies by Frank Sinatra where he would be in a sailor's costume, smoke with a mocking turn of his lower lip and appear melancholic with his gaze piercing the horizon. These two sailors moved me back into that black and white film era.

Then, I being myself was amazed at the neatness and cleannness of every little item and rigging on deck,above and around. Makes it hard not to touch them and set sail, but of course I touched nothing... I was wearing white anyway...too risky.

Kri Dewaruci (Indonesia) looks great from the prow of Dar Mlodziezy (Poland). Then came Shabab Oman of Oman and next was that wonderful 'dove' of freedom, Mir. Mir (Russia)

Sailors waiting for their turn to go down the stairs and then into the city for lunch and sight-seeing. Sailor signals to stop the upgoers to let the downgoers pass. A bit jammed, it was there...Mir is a popular ship.

It was a busy day indeed, for eveyone that happenned to be there.

Not the kind of event that one can produce serene-looking landscape scenes like the ones in your photos that I enjoyed in an other thread, where you make good use of the 14mm wide angle lens. I like the graphical and distorting approach that works well for those shots of Scotland.

Mine was a Sun-struck, hot day with lots of bumping..

Very nice set Yildiz. I love "The Mast" best. First one (Hagia Sophia) seems to be a bit hazy and can benefit from some
PP.

Thanks for the comments.
It actually was a hazy and difficult day for photography. The water vapour in the sky and the Sun's light turned the sky to a bright white colour. There was hardly any blue sky where Hagia Sophia is located. Instead, the light caught in the moisture particles created an effect of 'backlighting' rather than creating a smooth background or foreground.

The sky and the vapour over the waters erased the distinctive line of the horizon also. It appeared as though the sky and the water was blended in a 'milky' vapour.

If I do any more post processing, it may really look unnaturally sharp, saturated ... It's about the true weather conditions on that particular day.

Oo oo there's more shots, (thanks Yildiz), I didn't realize there were more, why didn't someone tell me I like the photo's of the mast and rigging also..amazing, actually I like all of the photos.

ps I feel a little deprived, I think I missed 'ol blueyes as a sailor in a nautical movie somehow, I do remeber seeing a couple of movies with him in them, I think one was a war movie and Robert Mitchum might have been in it also...or was it Dean Martin...

There are some. These are from the bunch that weren't hurt from the card's problems.

As for sailor 'blues', have a look at this page. "Anchors Aweigh" (1945), a colour movie which features the very young Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly and Kathryn Grayson. He mostly tap dances and sings away with Gene Kelly...

Yeah wow, how young was that! I might have seen that one but I'd have to watch it again to remember it...I remember a naval war movie (can't remeber much detail about it tho), it had lots of naval action etc. and the theme song was 'anchors aweigh' that one could have had John Wayne in it...maybe.

Luckily, I still have some of the rig detail shots of Mir (Russia) from the exterior where I was standing on the docks, just before the memory card went crazy.

Mir and the rest of the tallships from the distance. Getting closer to the front and... who's that perched up there? The nice Mir crew member smiles and waves back, just as my memory card started its craze of truncation art.
