Tiny sensor revenge gallery thread!

Unread post by bakubo »

Recently (well not just recently :)) with the introduction of NEX, talk of gear, you know "better", more expensive gear, dominates. One would think that it is not possible to take any worthwhile photos with anything that is not expensive and/or the newest. Let's have a tribute thread to lowly tiny sensor digicams and the photos we have made with them!

Please post photos you like that were taken with a tiny sensor (smaller than 4/3) camera or camera phone. EDIT: See new message right below. Let's celebrate photography in this thread! I know that if Sonolta was still here he would participate, but we can get this thing going too!

EDIT on 2014/7/16: Sensors no larger than 2/3". When I started this thread in 2010 all the sensors smaller than 4/3 were much smaller. Since then though there are lots of new cameras with 1" sensors from Sony, Nikon, and Panasonic. Those are fairly large sensors so let's keep this thread to the tiny sensors that were originally intended. Somewhere buried in this thread a year or two ago I posted saying the same thing, but I think it would be better to update this original post with the info.

I will get the ball rolling with 3 photos:

Yeah Henry good photos, and a good idea to show what small sensor cameras can do, they can take good photos, I've seen many photos taken by them and marvelled at the effortless DOF they have, where with a large sensor camera one would have to pay a lot more attention too composure to get the same result. I only have one leetle problem myself, I never got around too getting one, I looked a few times but haven't as yet made the plunge, so I unfortunately can't contribute.

Even a cheap one kept in your pocket can do some pretty good stuff. I have a 2 year old Canon A590IS that cost new $105 that I still keep in my pocket most of the time. I should get something newer pretty soon. :)

Thanks for posting, Doc. I like both, but the one in the stable is the one I like the best! Good work!

Come on, let's see some more tiny sensor photos!

I'll contribute three photos that meet the letter of your requirements, but may not meet your intent.

For some reason, I get the feeling that your intent may have been to feature the "shirt-pocket" cameras, even though you say nothing about size other than in reference to the sensor.

In any event, here are three images from my KM A2, all taken in Tuscany in 2004. The first is a street scene in Florence at sunset. The second is a street scene in Lucca, and the third is the shop window display of a candle shop in Lucca.

With best wishes,

Yes! Cell phone cameras are certainly fine for this thread. I explicitly stated in the OP that they were included. I particularly like the AINT WET BITCH photo.

No, I meant exactly what I said. Certainly the KM A2 is a small sensor camera. Of the 6 I have posted already 2 of them are from the Minolta D7i. As long as the sensor is smaller than 4/3 then that is a small sensor camera.

Good work! I want top go back to Italy! It has been 5 years since my last time there.

We enjoyed our time in Tuscany very much, partially because we were staying with a Swiss friend in his vacation home. It was located outside a tiny mountain town, and we used it as a base for day trips to the "name" cities such as Sienna, Pisa, Florence, etc.

I have a large set of conventional tourist images of the churches and statues for our personal memories, but most of those KM A2 images are little different in content than what every other tourist takes, and not worth posting here. In my mind - and with my quirky sense of humor - the images I savor are ones like those above, and the photo that I am going to attach to this message. Here is another shot from Lucca - which turned out to be a city we liked even more than the better known towns.

With best wishes,

May I assume that remark implies that you have no problem figuring out a use for the extra-virgin olive oil?
