Last week I was on a family holiday to Cornwall in the UK. I managed to get some time for picture taking and so I'd thought I'd share a few pictures here.

First of all, some pictures from the town in which we stayed, St. Ives.


We had mixed weather, although it was always warm. There was often a grey, over-cast period of the day, which gave a nice soft light. I liked this shot showing the old portion of the town, and also the sea either side of the isthmus on which St. Ives stands.


This shot shows the houses coming right down to the water front and the lovely clear water.


This is the main surfing beach in St. Ives, although sadly I have no surfing shots . Plenty of wild flowers in the hedgerows though.

Despite the many great suggestions on places to visit I'd been given on this forum, we only managed one big trip out of St. Ives and this was to the Eden Project, bascially a big exhibition of plants with an ecological theme. The major feature of the Eden Project is the set of large climate controlled green-houses called Biodomes.


They are pretty amazing structures. One set has a tropical (hot/humid) climate, and the other a mediterranean (warm / dry) climate.


They made me think of giant bubble-wrap. Apparently the material is self cleaning, i.e. dirt etc. can't stick to it.


From inside the Biodomes you can see more clearly the engineering that goes in to them. This shot was later in the day (after a late lunch) when the visitor numbers drop significantly and you suddenly seem to have the place almost to yourself .

The Eden Project was obviously a great place to photograph flowers (I have some more sets to share in the Flowers thread.)





Finally an evening shot of St. Nicholas' Chapel on Pendenis in St. Ives.

The domes look really nice inside, I remember the USA put
one up at our Expo 67 and it stirred a lot of interest.
I hope the lost little girl finds her Daddy :^)

That looks like a great place to visit Birma... A quiet little sea side town. Those bio-domes look really cool. I especially like the inside shot.
The flowers are up to your usual high standards.. Well done.
That shot of the church is beautiful. That trail leads the viewer right to the church. Great processing as well. John

What a lovely little 'lady guide' walking ahead and leading the way for us, so we don't get lost in this giant biodome.

Loved all the photos, Birma. Would have no objections for more...

Definitely a worthy treat of a vacation and photo shooting!

ps. Tilly looks most lovely and floral in that outfit...Can easily be mistaken for a flower taking an afternoon stroll. : )

Thanks John. I hope I haven't over processed the shots. There was a lot of high contrast between sky and land in some of the shots as they were often during the middle of the day (and filters were too much of a faff). I have tried dodging and burning for the first time and I am always concerned that I may be overdoing it when learning a new pp tool. Hopefully nothing looks too un-natrual.

Thank you Yildiz, and thank you from Tilly as well . She seemed to really enjoy her day out at the Eden project. When you are two even the bus ride from the car park is exciting .

What a nice place Birma, the lovely beach complete with wildflowers and the magic village. I liked the bubblewrap domes as well, I guess they would be able too grow some exotics there that like special climate conditions. Loved that round ball flower, amazing. And that church on the hill was grand as well, very period, pity the light at that time of day was just a little flat looking. Two huh, have you got a question limit yet, or is it still unrestricted

ps. Next hols can you possibly go to Doc Martins village? most of the people there seem slightly loopy, so I like them a lot.

Thanks Greg . We don't seem to have got to the "why, why, why, ..." stage yet. One answer is normally enough at the moment, but I'm sure it will not be long

Port Isaac in Cornwall is where they film Doc Martin I believe. Not sure if we'll be visiting Cornwall again soon (but I will keep an eye out for loopy people anyway). I am more drawn to the north west coast of Scotland as a place to visit, but it is such a long journey/drive (in UK terms ).

Very cosy streets with intriguing paving, Birma. Indeed, the town's a place all photographers would of liked to look closer...

The irony was that although it looks like there should be no cars, they were not restrcited from using the streets ("if you can fit your car down the street then go for it" seemed to be the attitude!). As you can imagine car parking was somewhat at a premium. I have also made it look like the streets were deserted which was not the case during most of the day (and night ) in July.

I thought of you Henry several times as I can well imagine you enjoying an exploration of the town and then capturing the variety of fishermen, artists, surfers and tourists that throng the streets.

Beach bars were also a bit of a novelty to my wife and I, who are more used holidaying on the wind swept isolation of the Hebridean coast rather than the hustle and bustle of Cornwall in the summer. (In fact finding any sort of bar is a challenge in that strongly Presbyterian area of Scotland).
