Canon RF 85mm f/1.9



this beauty arrived last week, and every other lens I own now hides in shame. The pic does not do it justice. It's a gleeming silver work of art, beyond mint, 20 blades, 600 grams of a build quality that makes the classic SLR stuff seem like modern plastic. Not a telephoto, 6 elements, fast enough for some event work:

CharlieWebster, how do you manage to focus manually with these lenses in relative darkness and with constantly moving objects (or should I say subjects)? What settings do you use? These are beautiful lenses and demonstrates again the versatility of the NEX system.

I liked the last shot, the light and the mood.

who needs OIS?



for these shots I frame, focus assist, and fill the buffer at 7fps. Repeat. Sometimes I turn the focus ring as I shoot continous, or simply move the camera back and forth.

the blur has more to do with shutter speed, here at iso 1250, you can see I really hit it (by accident, hehe)



This 85 was the near culmination of the post-war goal of Canon advocated by President Mitarai: "Catch-up with, and surpass the Leica."

It can be bought for ridiculously low prices today.

The real masterpiece was the Canon LTM 85mm f/1.8 of which 3000 copies were made.

The 85/1,9 was the quite common Gauss type (like the 90/2 Summicron) but the 85/1.8 was a telephoto design CANON patented in all important markets incl. USA and Germany. Designer was Jiro Mukai who did most of the last Canon RF lenses which were praised to fully reach, if not exceed, Leica glass quality. (ty to sonnar4)

The 1.8 is five instead of 6 elements, 470 grams, and reputed to be tack sharp wide open. It is all black.

A good copy is worth about 600USD, but sometimes go for much more.
