Dance Workshop

Hi all,

I attended a studio dance photography workshop last weekend and thought I'd share a few of the results. Kit was a Sony A700 and Tamron 17-50mm. Lighting was 3 cheap flash guns fired into a 2m umbrella for the first shot and a Elinchrom Ranger Quadra for the next two. The workshop was run by Paul Cox in Stockport, dancer was Emma Westray.

Anthony, I'd have like to have used one of the Ranger Quadra shots in the magazine, though I will admit I am not all that happy with the way the dancer's legs have crunched up into a fairly heavy shape. The sharpness and quality of the lighting in these two shots is impressive.

Since the Alpha triggering depends on an alien hot shoe for the Quadra Skyport module, how did you handle this? Were you use the high speed Skyport, or a direct cable connection?

Hi David,

Yes some of the other members captured shots where her left leg is more extended as she leaves the ground.

I used an e-bay Minolta to 'normal' hotshoe adaptor - a Pixel TF-325 and had the Skyport trigger in that.

The flash was firing into a 2m 'parabolic' reflecting umbrella, to the left, front, and slightly above the figure.

Good lighting and captures. A different angle might have offered more options maybe? I don't know why she poses the same in all shots when she changes the attires though.... The legs might have looked more airborne and less buckled under in a head-on front shot...maybe.

But good shots all the same!
