We have had a couple of very nice days here and the sunshine seemed a great opportunity to try out my new Hoya R72 Infrared filter on the Nex 5 with SEL 18-55. (This lens seems fine for IR shooting - no hotspots that I can see.)

A bit windy for the first shot which doesn't help the long exposure, but the sky was a lovely clear blue which converts nicely I think.

Yes, really nice. Did you have your NEX 5 converted for IR?

The IR filter seems to work ok Birma and I like the scenes, I'd like to also see how they would look at regular B&W just to compare, especially the stone bridge and chimney photo.

Despite the blurry tree, I like the first shot very much.

Not yet Henry . I did think it might be cool to have a Red Nex 3 converted to IR but that is an investment for a later date. I'm using a screw-on filter (Hoya R72) for the IR shots which means the exposure times are long (between 1 and 2 minutes).

Hi Greg, I took colour shots as part of setting up and here are B&W conversions.

of shots - I didn't think they were as strong.

I guess the second one in the last 3 shots could be considered the best. At least IMO.

I’m not sure which I like best now Birma, the alien landscape black sky IR version or the B&W ones, probably the IR ones I think by a smidgeon. I think the IR effect seems to benefit the appearance of foliage and the B&W approach is equally as good on architectural subjects imho.

I think all that cloud movement makes these "outtakes" more intriguing.

Hi Greg, bright sunshine and blue sky give a great effect in IR I think. It allows a far bigger contrast than full spectrum light.

Hi KB, the minute plus exposure times do give the skies with cloud an interesting effect.

Hi Birma,

I think I like the shots in the last series of photos for the extra contrast and sharpness that actually give a more 3D feel to the shots. The volumes are well-caught in these IR scenes. The smart choice of location and angle make a much better IR frame.
