The Crossness Pumping station

This fantastic piece of Victorian engineering/building was open last weekend as part of the London Open House project. Only one of the four pumps has been restored to full working order but it is a mighty piece of work. Apparently next to it and underground is a brick built vaulted resevoir covering 6.5 acres.

Three great photo caporal showing the enormity of the beam & wheel, very nice colour in shot 3. Public TV showed a BBC program about Joseph Bazalgette and the sewers of London awhile back.

Lovely examples of a lost art, making things out of cast iron, it’s truly amazing what they could do in those days, each item had to be made in wood first exact to the smallest detail, all that fancy scroll work, huge steel beams and fly-wheels so you could make the cavity in the shape of the object in a sand/clay mould for the pouring of the molten steel. One of the most difficult tricks was getting the replica out of the two halves of the mould without damaging the mould. Nice pix caporip btw.
