Re: Birds 2012
This is a great collection of bird photos. I have nothing so exotic around me, but here is a shot I took yesterday. It is a Mockingbird, the state bird of Texas. They are out in full force this spring, and have been gracing all of my trees and filling the air with sound. It stayed on my fence long enough for me to grab a few shots.. John

If the last thing you remember hearing is somebody yelling 'CLEAR!!!', assume you've had a problem!!

Amazing Finch variety, Mark and lovely shots from the zoo. : )
Very colourful bunch.
Hi John;
Neat Mockingbird there. It's still more than the variety I get in city zone here. Good find.

More great collections of birds. The Secretary Bird really does look like it was put together from the spare parts box . I like the woodpecker and great tit from your archive Mark. Nice oof blur from the 55-200.
Nex 5, Nex 6 (IR), A7M2, A99 and a bunch of lenses.

Tanzania marches on. The francolins are sometimes called spurfowl, and on this one you can see those spurs halfway down the leg. Don't mess with these 'chickens'. Sigma 400, 1/1000, f7.1, ISO 800.
Lappet-face Vultures are the bad boys of the vulture world. They like large carcasses, take first pickings, and have even been known to attack live prey. Sigma 400, 1/1250, f8, ISO 800.
I wish I'd gotten the Little Bee-eater in full sun, but you can't get out of the car to change your angles. I did like the somewhat unusual pose - tail bent under the body. Sigma 400, 1/640, f10, ISO 800.

Re: Birds 2012
Very sucessful Tanzania set yet again, Argonaut.
I absolutely love the pattern on the Francolins. The vulture shot is exceptional. Looks very intimidating. And the Bee-eater is sweet. I think it's trying to balance its body on a rather shaky branch. I saw birds do that when their legs are too far-apart-spaced which makes holding the body up straight very difficult. ( I saw the sparrows do that ...)
Thanks for sharing,
Yildiz

Hi John,
When I first saw your image, I thought it was a Great Grey Shrike (Lanius excubitor) with some sort of juvenile or seasonal plumage. Turns out I was looking at the official Texas state bird! Didn't even know the different States had official state birds! Great capture!
Hi Argonaut,
I agree with Yildiz on your images. The shot of the Coqui Francolin is very good. A pity it just turned it's head! It actually looks kind of cute in that pose
The vulture looks like something from a horror movie. It sits straight up, with the bald head and angry looking, black eyes. And finally the bee-eater, how I'd love to see one in the wild. They have these lovely pattern of colors over their bodies. And I have to admit being a sucker for small birds, so this one can't do wrong, even if it was hideous
Keep those African birds coming Argonaut!

Here are a couple of sea-bird shots taken while on a boat trip (read about it in my post here http://www.photoclubalpha.com/forum/vie ... =40&t=6510).
Not a rare bird, but I was really pleased to get one in flight, nearly in focus
Skye 2012 - Gull by Birm, on Flickr
Cormorants and Shags (I think) drying themselves on a skerry between fishing trips.
Skye 2012 - Cormorant Rock 2 by Birm, on Flickr
Both with A700 and Sigma 70-300 APO (no lens gear stripping - hooray!).

Re: Birds 2012
Birma, I was wondering how did you shoot those birds with a Nex, until I saw the bottom line.
Nice shots.
Nice shots.
Re: Birds 2012
Thanks Doc. There are some things that seem easier with the A700 and its PDAF . I've used the A700 a lot more this holiday, probably 50/50 with the Nex. They both have their pluses and minuses for me.

Re: Birds 2012
Good to see some wildlife from Skye, Birma.
I like how you pursued the seagull in flight with the A700. Would it be so hard to shoot one with the NEX?
Nice shot of the couples after their fishing encounter. : )
Thanks for sharing,
Yildiz
