Allatoona Dam, Sun Surveror and Super moon

I use a cool app on my phone called Sun Surveyor. I know when and where in degrees the sun and moon will rise and set. Even 3d views of their paths. I used it here and had planned this shot two weeks in advance. Going to the dam and figuring when and where the moon would come up. At the time I didn't know it was going to be a super moon, just a full moon. If you landscape and have a smartphone the Sun Surveyor app takes all the guess work out of it.

Stunning shot Cosmonaut. Great clarity and a great composition of elements in the picture.

I like that scene, sounds like a handy app, I have a friend who has the sky on his phone, it s an app (don't recall the name) that shows all the constellations in real time for your location and whatever direction you point the phone at, I thought that was pretty cool as well, I guess the phone has to have a gps built in for it to work properly, not sure on that though.

Very nice image Cosmonaut. I like the lighting of the moon and it's reflection very much. Somehow it looks like the scene is leaning to the left too much, but that has to be the perspective pulling tricks on my brain ;)

You may be thinking of the Android app "Star Chart". Although there may be similar apps available for the Android phones, that is the one I have on my phone and it seems to match your description.

BTW, in regard to the "Sun Surveyor" app mentioned in the original post of this thread, I purchased that last year after Gary Friedman mentioned it, and it's been on my Android phone since then. As Cosmonaut said, it can be a very handy tool for advance planning of an image you have in mind. In my case, I wanted to see well in advance how the lighting would be for my son's outdoor wedding that was going to be late in the day.

Thanks all. The leveling drove me nuts. I think the lean is more a curve in the shoreline as I wound up using the flag pole and support under it as a guage to level with.

I see what you mean. The flagpole on the dam is indeed straight. As I said, perspective playing tricks.

Sorry to get here so late. The photo IS straight, as the flagpole and superstructure of the power plant below it show. However, a 3 degree rotation right gets rid of the queasy feeling I get looking at it, and doesn't throw the true verticals off enough to make you think it's crooked.

Better late than never they say... : )

Great shot indeed, Cosmonaut.

I grew up by a dam structure when I was a baby, a toddler and finally a child and dam structures always had a great impact on me. Seeing one is like seeing an old friend from my childhood.

Thanks for sharing. The many elements that came together to make the frame a beauty are pretty neat; moon eflections, sky, lights, plants in the foreground, and the surrounding natural elemens... mak a neat wholesome.

The reflection in the water needs to be nearer vertical; in fact if the flagpole and reflection are about equal and opposite the angle would be just right. Otherwise this exposure is exceptionally good!
