I don't do natural history and can only admire those that do. With that admission in mind here are my toughts. This shows the Osprey doing something. I don't always rate those shots of birds just standing around or sitting in the nest. Not only that but it shows the structure of the nest too. The lighting might possibly have been better but the blue sky background is not distracting. Well done.
Yes, this is a great shot of the Osprey that looks like it's feeding the chicks.
And you're right about the 70-400G being a great but heavy lens. I have both the 70-300G and 70-400G. When traveling on holiday, as I did to La Palma, I prefer the 70-300G. It's a whole lot lighter and better manageable without support. I shot some great bird footage with it (see the Birds 2012 thread). I don't think it's worse than the 70-400G IQ wise.
