As one can see from these photos, playing at the beach really takes it out of you. Imagine what they would look like after two waves. It also appears that salt water induces hair loss.
I think I will stay in the wading pool. Have to keep what little hair I have left.

I'm sure they'll perk up a bit after a spell. You've still got it Henry.

Here are some bodyboarders at Sandy Beach a few days ago. The waves there are amazing, but I never get in the water there -- too dangerous. It is fun to take the 22 bus out there sometimes though and watch the bodyboarders and bodysurfers. Here is some info from Wikipedia:

Sandy Beach is a beach on the South Shore of Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi. It is known for its excellent bodyboarding and bodysurfing opportunities due to shore break that breaks very close to the shore. Consequently, more injuries occur per year at Sandy Beach than any other beach in Hawaiʻi, earning it the infamous nickname, "break-neck" beach. The water is especially dangerous during high surf, when strong rip currents are present.

Yeah, it is fun to get out in the water, but at Sandy Beach and Makupu'u Beach we just watch the crashing surf and the crazy bodyboarders and bodysurfers. At those two beaches we are careful just to walk on the beach and get our feet wet. The surf at both of those places is really dangerous, but the sight is awesome. There are tons of other beaches though where it is fun to get in the water, Sunset Beach (summer only), Waimea Beach (summer only), all the beaches in Waikiki, etc. Sunset, Waimea, and others are on the North Shore and in the summer the waves are calm, but in the winter they get monster waves much of the time (20-30 feet/7-10 meters or more) and they have world class surfing contests there.

A great series Henry- The two gents in the last photo are a perfect "end" to the story! Those action shots are very great too...
When I was 13 my family went to Hawai'i, I tried to bodysurf on the North Shore of O'ahu, I was caught in an undertow, and truly thought I was going to die..I held my breath, closed my eyes, and finally rolled up on the shore in a bruised and battered ball... My mom asked me why I was so eager to return to the hotel..... Thanks for sharing, John.

Thanks, John. Glad you didn't break your neck. Yeah, when I was 13 I would have tried it too, probably enthusiastically, but the beaches I mentioned earlier are ones that I don't venture into the water at these days. They are famous and infamous for the heavy, crashing surf. I remember in December 2008 Obama and his family were here for a couple of weeks after the election. Everyday on the local TV news and newspaper they would report some of the things they did the day before -- always afterwards since they kept his schedule confidential. One day he went out to Sandy Beach to do some bodysurfing and they had a couple of photos. He grew up with it though, just like almost all the people out there doing it.

After the talk of Sandy Beach and Makupu'u Beach we decided yesterday to take a bus along the windward coast to Makupu'u Beach and then later we took a bus further along the windward coast through Waimanalo and on to Kailua. We ate lunch there and then backtracked all the way back to Waikiki. I took photos at Makapu'u that I need to get imported into LR. Later I will probably post a few here. I have been shooting too much lately and have a backlog of photos to get imported and work on. In the meantime, here are some earlier Makupu'u photos I posted 1.5 years ago:

I said I would come back to this thread and post a few photos from Makapu'u Beach that I took a few days ago. Here are a few. Depending on the time of day and tides, wind, and season the waves vary a lot.
