New Orleans Street Life

New Orleans is a great city for street photograph. The city has a 'let it all hang out' attitude, which makes for ample opportunities. Most of these were taken with the 70-200G SSM and 50mm f1.7. Enjoy!

Great going! I especially like the one of the trombonist with the little boy. Wonderful!
We were in New Orleans in 2004 and 2009 and I enjoyed taking photos on the street also, especially in the French Quarter.

They seem to be very music inclined in that section, as well as some artsy characters thrown in for good measure. What is the story with the guy in #3 on the paper dispenser, is that a statue or a real person? I like #4 with the little girl who is fascinated by the trumpet just as much as #8 they are both great moments.

Thanks guys. All of these photos were shot in the French Quarter, mostly around Jackson Square. Jackson Square is a place where local artists, musicians, fortune tellers, etc gather to make a living. We passed through there almost every day, as there was always something interesting going on.
Greg- that is a real man on the newspaper dispenser. We saw at least 10 people that had spray painted themselves silver or gold, and would sit motionless until someone came by. The Spiderman, and the man in the African get up would also stand motionless, then pose with tourists.
We saw that man on the dispenser, that same night at about 2am, standing by those same dispensers. We actually talked to him for a few minutes. He had a part-time regular job, but he made more money on the square...You would see people sleeping in their 'spots' on the square, so that they would have the prime places during the day. I would really like to spend some time studying the people of the square...They seem to be a sub-culture all unto themselves.. John

Outstanding sightings, john. : )
No wonder these costumed men earn more on the streets than working at a daily job. I agree with the guys on the selection of the more successful shots. There's something most genuine about the shots with the little blond girl and the little black boy respondin to the musicians.
Thanks for sharing,
Yildiz

Great shots John. I'm especially fond of the subject as I'm an enthousiast jazz and swing musician myself. Have been all my life. The people of New Orleans breath music and you captured that. Well done.

Thanks Yildiz, Mark and elvinomarin.
Mark- That city truly breathes music. No matter what time of day or night we were out and about, there was live jazz echoing through the streets. It was magic.
Elvinomarin- Thanks so much, and welcome to the forum! You will find this a friendly and helpful place.
