Here are three from one of our detours to work a few months ago. Well – you may as well take advantage of a night or two away by looking at the local scenery on the way.

I can see why The Lakes inspired those famous poets and artists! It’s quite breathtaking – even when the sun isn’t shining.

Great detour, I must say. I heard so much about Lake District but
did not have a chance to visit last time I was in England.

That's a beautiful set of picture.

Very nice views Pat. The reflections are great in the first two and I love the colours in the third. I've never visited the Lakes, but you are tempting me with these pictures.

Thanks all for the kind comments The Lake District is indeed one of our National Trust gems and is well protected from development, for the time being. It has an interesting history, too.
I've probably only seen a fraction of it - there are scores of 'lakes' there. Only one (Bassenthwaite) is actually named a 'lake'. The big ones are either 'Mere' (a local name here too) or 'Water' and the little ones are 'Tarns'.

I have heard you have lots of beautiful lakes in Minnesota too. We almost got up there earlier this year while we were on a road trip through Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma. We ended up only being in southern Minnesota though and just passed through. Minnesota is known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes."

Nice pics, especially considering that you probably didn't have much time to devote to shooting them. I like the Crummock Water one the best.

I lived in the Lakes for 20 years and can vouch for the beauty on the area.
Never go on a bank holiday as it is full to bursting with tourists.
I liked late autumn to spring best for the light.
However when it rains it really pours (it is the Lake District after all and the water has to come from somewhere).

Lucky you living there! I agree - never on a bank holiday or even a summer weekend. These were taken late Autumn - very kind light then, as you say. It's a good while since I went there in Spring.

I'm home now and can see the photos (Work blocks the photo host sites).
Lovely views as everyone has said.
I think the Derwentwater one is the most "Lakes" like.
Mist on the fells, wooden jetty and ducks!

You should go!
Just remember it's not like Skye, millions of people and cars (well it seems like it anyway).
We were in Ambleside last Sunday and it was busy.
A mix of genuine outdoor types and bargain hunters (us!).

I'd suggest avoiding Windermere (full of tourists) and do the Ambleside-Grasmere-Keswick stretch (A591) or from Ambleside up "The Struggle" to the Kirkstone Pass Inn (we had lunch there) and up the A592 to Ullswater. All good walking areas and great scenery.
