Where the USA invaded England….

At Whitehaven. It’s a small port on the coast of Cumbria in the next county North from me. Captain John Paul Jones 1747 – 1792 of the US Navy sailed his ship into port in the middle of the night, ran out of time but spiked some cannons and invaded the local inn where his men got inebriated……… then they left.
They had a ceremony a few years ago to officially 'forgive' the visiting modern day Americans who attended.
We were working here and managed to fit in a few images before we left for home.

Statue of an An American spiking a gun. I'm not sure what someone has put in his cuff, there One of the other 'Americans' had a bottle of 'Bud' on him and a woolly hat! It was a Saturday - after a boozy 'Friday night out' for the locals.

A similar story is told in Fishguard (West Wales). This time the force was French led by an American. It's claimed to be the last time that Britain was invaded and it happened in about 1796 or 1797.

PS Number 3 for me. Something of interpretation in there rather than just a record of what was in front of the camera.

Love these, like the rest of the members. The sculpture is pretty intimidating after times of oxidation. : )

The skies and the angles of perception complement one an other in the 2nd and the 3rd shots.

Thankyou for the kind comments It's an interesting place - a bit 'rough round the edges' as there was once mining here and it has a very working class background. There's a newish Marina as well as the old outer harbour, now.

Great set and very interesting narrative. My favorites are #1 in the 3 image set and the last one.
I love that almost Copper Sulphate blue. That is one of my favorite shades of blue.
The combination of images and narrative made it that much more enjoyable.

and being a proud Scotsman, as was John Paul Jones,
he was a tough taskmaster and was sentenced in one of the American states for cruelty to his crewmen,one of whom who died . He was a Captain in the American navy and then he joined the Russian navy,became a rear admiral fell out of favour and lived in paris where he died and was buried, in the very early 1900s his body was exhumed and is now buried in the naval academy chapel in Annapolis USA.
