Recently I was ill but at the end of my flu I was motivated enough for a small DIY macro project, which could be fulfilled at home.
I made a small aquarium including optical fibers at the sides and the bottom for the lighting. (it was lit with a wireless minolta 5600HSD) I asked my wife to bring some living fish food from the zoo shop. Some selected photo:







I used a sony a100 with a minolta 100mm macro+5dp marumi achromat lens.

You're great Marcell, wonderful shots you have there.
As I know, those are moving constantly in water, so how did you set the focus?

Those are excellent (and very interesting) pictures.

Where did you get the optical fibres please? What sort of exposure can you get using your set up? I'm really very surprised that a relatively few fibres allow what's obviously an acceptable exposure. I would have guessed that you would be struggling for light.

Actually they end up as yummie "chickens" for my guppies.
The composition and focusing is really difficult. Usually I just put the rig on tripod and set the focus manually more or less and wait for the animals to swimm into the picture and I try to expose in time. Fom hundreds of shots I select few good (in focus and comosition is also OK). In photoshop I used also the cloning stamp to remove withe dots (backscatter from small particles and bubbles).
The aquarium is quite narrow (4-5 mm) but much wider than the DOF.

It!s a good company if you're in the US but after shipping cost, custom fees and VAT, it's not so good to order from Germany. Last time I ordered my fibers from here:

I used iso 200 and F16-f22 and there was no problem with the light (I used -1 flash compensation in TTL mode). The trick is that the subject is very close to the light source (end of the fiber) and the lens is also close to the subject.

Superb Shots

Fantastic! I've just been showing this to my husband - we thought at first you'd used an objective lens of which we have one - as yet unused! This is for studio work and will be attached to bellows.
