A couple of weeks ago I posted an image in the Lens Lore forum that was taken with the Zeiss 85mm f:1.4, shot wide open on my NEX-6. That image was taken at a two-day event held by re-enactors of the US Civil War, and was shot wide open with the goal of obtaining a shallow depth of focus.

Here are some additional images from that week-end, also taken using the Zeiss 85mm, but these were taken between f:4.4 and f:5.0 - except for one image at f:1.4, as noted.

For those who are not familiar with the subject, the last image is of the ammunition limber for one of the cannon.

Here are some additional images from that weekend, all shot with the Zeiss 85mm lens.

Because the type of events that were being re-enacted took place 150 years ago, it seemed appropriate to have black & white images, so I was shooting RAW + JPEG, with the in-camera JPEG images set for B&W "Creative Mode".

The final image is included to illustrate that these events are not limited to "boys playing soldier". The folks who participate in these events attempt to recreate all aspects of life in that era.

I really like the firing line Tom, with all of the black powder smoke - great shot. The focal length seems to suit you

B&W was a wise move. I think the lens is too sharp and dilutes your subject's attempt at being historic. Some grain might be useful. The smoke and glare in the firing line shot is a good example of this idea. I shot a weekend of family events with this lens and have my own ideas about it's worth. What did you think about your experience?
