As I was trying to back up my data, I lost a partition (500Gb) that had my vacation
photos (~100K). Luckily, the originals are safe on another external drive but lost all the
PP'ed images. I could not figure out why my computer was crippled and after about
few days, realized one of the 4 partitions on a 2TB drive turned into RAW from NTFS.
I formatted the drive and am trying to "recover" images. Vagaries of life....

In case you are delinquent, please do back up asap and save yourself a lot of aggravation.

Thank you for the reminder. I have a RAID-5 configuration on my workstation and three external backups. And still, it's all mechanical so you never know. At least you didn't lose the original images. A good lesson for us all.

Sury, I am so sorry to hear about your misfortune. I know that sick feeling you must have in your stomach. I am glad that you still have your originals though since that is what is most important. I hope it turns out that you can recover the processed versions.

I have about 67k originals in Lightroom plus I have something like 10,000 raw film scans that I have not processed. I have everything backed up to several external hard disks (kept in 2 locations) so I hope I don't someday lose it all. You may remember this scanning thread of mine from earlier this year:

As Henry said, I'm glad you've still got the originals.

Sorry for the loss of your photos. I know what you're dealing with (kind of). I had a complete hard drive crash a few years ago, in 2011, and lost a lot of stuff. I picked up a software called Data Recovery Wizard and it worked pretty good. I recovered 99% of what was on the crashed drive. I since learned a lesson and now everything is saved on 3 different drives just in case. I really hope you can save your lost photos.

Thank you all for your words of support. The insult to the injury was that I lost the partition
during back up. The scary part was that I thought I lost all the 4 partitions. It turns out only
one is affected and that too it looks like the File table corruption. I am able to recover almost 90,000
of the photos and since I do not have a count on the partition, I am going to take what I got
and move on. At least I get to work on them again. Now I will resume my pastime.

Sorry to hear your struggle with the files. Luckily the originals were back-upped on a separate drive. It just reminds me to do some back up in the weekend.
I still write my files on DVDs in addition to copy them to two separate HDDs.

Gosh, that's a shocking story, Sury! I've sometimes lost of quite amount of data, but never that much! You are very wise because you have backed up your photos from time to time. Losing PP'ed ones is of course sad, but you have not lost the memories even the not PP'ed photos carry. Without backup you're lost might have been terrible and depressing one.

I too make backup of all my data from time to time, but too rarely really. You're story reminds me that I should do it in coming days again.

Looks like my Hard drive is going to die. It is only a matter of time based on the latest diagnostics.
Something to do with reallocation table errors are below threshold. Will be installing a replacement
drive tonight. Hopefully I should be back up to "normal" in the next few days.
