Masaya Volcano, Laguna de Apoyo, Nicaragua

This is a water filled crater, which has been inactive for few thousand years.
Laguna de Apoyo. Yours truly lugging the 70-400 and Missus. Behind the crater
is lake Nicaragua.

Masaya Volcano. The very first national park in Nicaragua. The sulfur fumes were very strong and we were limited
to about 5 minutes stay for our own sake. The crater was about 1000 meters from where we were standing.

Because of the fumes, we could not hike up the hill to the cross. The story has it (according to our guide) that the
natives would offer young boys/girls to "fire god" below to pacify; when Spaniards conquered the area, they put up a cross
and convinced the natives that this will serve the purpose and it seemed so far it has.
