All you have to do is stop the cat getting the bird

With the 70-300mm SSM the A700 is almost perfect. After trying the 70-300mm SSM on the A900, I realise it is intended mainly for the A700 (better illumination and geometry on the smaller format, by far).

Thankyou for the tips, advice and welcoming. We do have a variety of birds in our yard but they are safe, Ive constructed a cat enclosure under our home as we are on a sloping block, so the cats (we have 2 abyssinians) can look and not catch.

wave_wizard, welcome! If I had to choose, #3 would be my favourite, although the little branch behind the bird's head is a bit distracting (I found shooting birds an extremely difficult task, so I gave up). And Sonolta, thanks a lot for your (as usual wonderfully illustrated) advice (in these thread and elsewhere). I don’t do cats, but most of your suggestions can be easily applied to family portraiture. Thanks a lot.

Love the bird shot, and I've a special fondness for orange cats. Keep shooting, and especially, keep posting! This is good stuff!
