Your admin has finally managed to get access to the forum (seriously, I deal with so many variations of websites and the forum is not recognised as having a different URL to the main site - get locked out all the time!). Excellent insight into film-making. We have a local festival here, the Alchemy Film Festival, but it's more focused on installation art and not on telling any kind of stories in film.

Hi Sig;

I'm genuinely enjoying viewing the shooting process through your eyes and documentation. Many cinematographic tricks and tips are revealed through your shots. Dramatic dance figures are also very telling. Waiting between the takes and adjustments must be hard for the actors/dancers !

Good work by everyone. Thanks for your patience and efforts for depicting the scenes the best way possible, Sig. Love how the black box turned out and the lights were used...

David, I've been looking at the website for the Alchemy Film Festival. I like the wide variety of subject matter that they're presenting. It's very interesting. I wish I could be there to see everything.

Yildiz, yes it can take a long time to get everything set up for just one shot. The actors/dancers were always told to arrive on location several hours after us, so that they could at least avoid waiting for the initial set up.
We've been doing the scene shoots in our spare time, over a period of a year. For this film, I think we averaged about 2 full weekends of work for every three months (around 20 days). When the guys let me see a first rough draft of the movie, I was surprized that after all of the work, we only had a 15 minute movie.

Well, the photos I posted may be gone (maybe I'll repost a few), but below is the link to the movie on YouTube. Keep in mind that this is a short art house film (with a narrative expressed through acting and dancing) limited to 15 minutes. It's based on the true life story of the young director's grandfather, Ashlock, who lived almost a century ago. Ashlock drank and and was a man that normal people dreaded to cross paths with (was known to have gouged a (bad) man's eyes out with his thumbs, and was feared enough to bring a mine strike to an end with his mere presence), but in the end his broken heart made him follow his beloved wife to the grave.

p.s. The part of Ashlock is played by Milan Valko of Slovakia and former dancer with the St. Louis Ballet (he recently returned to Slovakia to be with his girlfriend). In fact, the entire cast was from either the St. Louis Ballet or The Big Muddy Dance Company in St. Louis.
