photo thread request

I have almost no photos of people playing guitars, but here is a guy playing guitar and singing on Granville Street in Vancouver, BC:



If you look closely you will see he has a broken string. It wasn't broken when I was about to take his photo, but just before I took the photo it broke. He was embarrassed about it.

Personally, I like photo threads. Not as competitions, but just to share. Unless you are making a living from your photography what is the point if you don't show it to anyone? Thanks!

I can except everything as a response to my threads if it's reasonable. This includes:
- honest critcs why someone doesn't or does like my pic
- ideas for improvement, crops, slight modifications
- anything related to the pic or its context or its content

Reasonable answers exclude:
- responses that try to "best" me, showing how bad my picture is and how good is his/her
- my photo strangely distorted in eye hurting pop art colours, or barley recongizeable
- foul language telling me I am a clueless idiot and, a (banned term) full of hate and that my photo shows I have no idea about photography.

For myself, I sometime see pictures posted that just don't work for me. If there is nothing else for me to say, then I just don't post an answer. I don't need to comment on everything. If I like it or have some suggestions or ideas, I answer.

Here's Folsom Prison blues by our Friday night folk session scratch band - Dave Mullen fronting (he does a lot of Johnny Cash), and I'm out of shot most of the time at the right, playing acoustic bass - not my instrument, but we have too many guitar players so whenever anyone else is leading a song, I'll swap my guitar for viola, mandolin, bouzouki, bass or something else worth adding to the mix. This one was broadcast by the BBC (not the YouTube video, of course, that was shot by Dave's girlfriend!).

I never can get any pictures of our own sessions or concert gigs because there no hands left to carry the camera. The last time I did all the shots were on a Canon I was testing.

David, that was great! Thanks for posting it. Maybe you need to convince Shirley to video more of your performances. She may need to be compensated for her trouble in some way.

Amazing moothie! (those things can rip your mouth up played hard like that too). We've lost our best local harmonica player - Rory McLeod, moved to Orkney three years ago. Most people know his recordings, because he did the music for Nic Parks's 'Creature Comforts' (Aardman Animations) films - the mainly percussion and moothie track which closes every episode, all recorded by Rory himself. He was UK one-man band champion when younger, now he's mainly into soundtrack production and his own albums. Like most pro musos who end up in a region like the Borders, he was more likely just to come to a free session and join in, than actually do a paid gig on home ground.

We don't have a really good moothie player right now, though one or two have a go. I used to go to sessions at Sandy Bells in Edinburgh where one well-known player had what amounted to a bandolier loaded with tons of different keys and types of harmonica. As ever, I never photographed this. He's dead now. I just don't mix the photography with sessions (it is hard enough keeping an eye on instruments in a crowded pub, when your attention is fully focused on other musicians, I never even take my wallet - ever, even locally - just stuff some cash in my back pocket). Also the light in these places isn't just bad, it's awful. They are dark, small, crowded, untidy.

Here is one photo, from November 2003 St Andrews Night - in a function room now converted to three hotel suites, and lost to the town, the Small Hall Band (a group dedicated to bringing kids into a celtic session environment, has produced a whole crop of professional musicians from this lot shown here, several with their own bands and finalists in awards and stuff). Olympus E-1, on test, used unwisely at ISO 3200 1/180th at f/2 on the 50mm macro, two images are stitched to produce this - the full size file is 24MB but extremely coarse and noisy:



I liked the almost painting-like feel of the muted colours and dark shadows. This was a large room (this is not a typical group, more a massed band to celebrate a special night). Even so the level of lighting and the look of the lighting is fairly typical.

If you act like an adult, and refrain from spamming other user's threads with useless nonsense and personal attacks then I suspect you will not have a problem. If you happen to be a clueless poster, or you show signs that you are a (banned term), then you may be told so in a public forum. Secondly, if you post sucky photos to a public forum then you are completely exposing yourself to someone showing you, or someone telling you just how sucky your photos really are.

Let's take this post as an example. What are the authors intentions? Why does he use bad language? Is it a sign of immaturity or aggressivity? Can't he deal with being called a fanboy when he has done so a hundred times? We ultimately don't know, but I would qualify this as a not reasonable follow up. I am surprised this style of writing is accepted around here.
