Our daughter Ailsa has just had the final stage of confirmation that she's secured a post in the editorial management team for committee reports for the Scottish Parliament. She will no doubt miss directing photo shoots (her current job is with a leading on-line seller of Scottish stuff like kilts) but welcome the prospects offered by a Civil Service career.

And last weekend, I was made an Honorary Fellow of the Master Photographers Association, and then had to put up with everyone telling me they voted against me before buying me another drink (we got to bed at 5am and I counted at least seven pints after midnight... it must have been good beer as we were up at 8.30, breakfast at 9, and working on interviews by 10!).

Congratulations! So what do you owe to all the ones who DID vote for you?

I am told the vote was unanimous because it had to be otherwise they couldn't do it. I never know what to make of these things. I was voted a conferred Fellowship by the BIPP in 1991 - not an honorary one, but an 'invitation' - and in effect it made me not really a Fellow at all, and if I wanted to gain the genuine respect of my peers, I would need to submit for Associateship (which I did not have) and Fellowship in the usual way by submission of work. They considered the early work I did with digital reproduction in the 1980s, and the technical paper delivered to one conference at that time, needed recognition. But within five years, every forward thinking commercial photographer had come just as far.

With the MPA, I have at least held a judged Associateship since 1987, in commercial/advertising and editorial photography. The Hon Fellowship is for services to the association and to the photographic industry, not for any merit as a photographer. There are not many Hon Fellows and it's a lifetime award which you need grey hair to get, so I guess they decided that 23 years after first editing their magazine (I have done it twice, with a break to do the other lot in the middle!) I should have it. I also have President's Awards at different times from both bodies, those are purely personal decisions by the year's president.

I'm very proud to have Vinnie O'Byrne's signature on my Hon Fellowship - probably the most distinguished president any association could have in Europe, and also a most amazing photographer of the female form.

The sad thing is that these two bodies, MPA and BIPP, that I have worked very hard to bring into co-operation over the last fifteen years (not alone, of course) are now going their own ways, scrapping their joint qualifications board and their joint annual awards. 'My' side of things is not responsible. I will continue to work towards co-operation.

Those are two important events: seeing your kids grow and standing on their own feet is one great joy - and a relief that the energy you invested in raising them now is carried on autonomously. And getting acknowledged and rewarded for continuous work and dedication always can be a component for contentment as well as an incentive for ongoing commitment
