Just a big thank you to David for the latest edition of the Photoworld magazine.

Absolutely stunning photos of Scotland by Duncan McEwan as well as the Kingfisher series by our very own "kingfisher" in these forums.

I just wish I was going down to the show in Birmingham next month.

My copy arrived today but is still in its plastic wrapper; I am saving it as a special treat to open it tomorrow morning. Scottish landscapes and Kingfishers - fab!

I live so near to Birmingham that I should go really. It will have to be the Sunday though.

I apologise for the slightly flat reproduction on this issue. The paper is from China, and I don't think the printers have got the ink densities right. It looks best under tungsten light - under daylight, it is lacking magenta. So read your copy using a tungsten light for the best impression!

My copy of Photoworld arrives about 10-15 days after the British members get theirs. I'd appreciate it if the features were kept a secret though I knew that kingfisher photos were to appear in this issue.

You know, so I can enjoy a surprise too!

Eagerly anticipating David Kilpatrick. I'm also curious to see waht Chinese paper looks like and how that affects the photo-printing process.

Yildiz, I am sure that Turkish printers are using cheap paper from China just the same way British ones are! Turkey has some excellent printers, and also manufactures some print industry equipment as well as some of the best minilab equipment for the photo industry.

The problem my printers have is the extreme variability of our temperature and humidity, and the excessive cost of keeping any paper stock in climate controlled conditions, for a small company. I have known one of their directors now for over 30 years, and I have worked with them almost exclusively for the last 25 years. When anything is not up to standard, I don't start asking for reprints or money back or anything like that - we launch an investigation and find out why. It may not be the fault of the Chinese paper, but I am about to send them a request to increase the quality and weight of paper used on all my magazines. Advertising is getting difficult to find, which means issues will have fewer pages. So a thicker, better grade of paper seems in to be needed for 2009.

David, heavier paper might be better, as one of Duncan's snow shots suffered from the ink on the other side of the page showing through.

Hi David,

I'm quite sure you're perfectly right about our printing industry. I know a couple of firms who print for some European firms because of their high performance of delivering good printing for a good price. Some firms also provide unique styles which have a customer demand also. We also import paper types with varying qualities for printing. My experience lacks Chinese paper personally because I used HP photograpy paper for my personal printing work. I select it on my own, therefore I'll have to ask the labs I'll be contacting what kinds of paper they can provide for a couple of my large print requirements.

You have every right to make Photoworld magazine a spectacular photography resource and I'd like to see the photos printed on thicker papers too as breaside already suggested. Hopefully more advertising will come your way.

I think this issue of winter entries is quite charming with an abundance of some very colourful work from the forum members also.
