This is just a request, but I would like it if when someone starts a thread with some of their photos they make it clear in the text if other photos are welcome or if the thread is off-limits for new photos. I try to always say when I start a photo thread, but most people don't so it isn't clear at all. Thanks!

Personally, I like photo threads. Not as competitions, but just to share. Unless you are making a living from your photography what is the point if you don't show it to anyone? Thanks!

Even Gustav got followup kingfishers when he posted his first pix. But only a couple.

I think if you post something popular, or commonplace, you are likely to see many 'me too' responses with photos. If you post something unique or difficult to get, you may get zero response in photos. Dr H for example has posted some great Armenian historical photos, and has not been swamped with squirrels as a result.

Now if you can show me a photograph of the late great Ray Kane playing slack key, I have no pictures of guitar players to rival Ray. But Don would probably post a female rock thrasher I have one of Ray's tapes - sadly, a tape, never got it transferred to digital iPod format. Everyone thinks of Hawaiian guitar and uke in the popular cheesy mode, and don't know the amazing music of slack key guitar - or what taropatch tuning is... I'd love to see some current performers, if they exist.

Theres some of this style (as an sampled edit) on Spirits album "Future Games" I recall wikipedia had some info on it although how accurate it is I would not know!

There have been quite a few threads where I wanted to post a photo that was related somehow, but didn't because it wasn't clear if the original poster just meant to show a photo and not start a photo thread. Okay, I will assume, unless explicitly stated otherwise, that it is okay.

Slack key guitar is quite popular here and I have been meaning to go and hear some live performances, but just haven't gotten around to it. I have seen some informal performances at festivals and down at the beach occasionally though.

Magic! I know the first tune - but I had never heard it sung - only instrumental! What a remarkable language. The tape I have is entirely instrumental, and I did not know Ray Kane was a singer. Thanks!

Seems to consist of sortof E minor and D minor type chords, very easy to listen too, very relaxing, you have too have a lot of respect for someone who can make a quitar sound that good, I've always been envious of people who can make a banjo sound good too, my club fingers are useless at co-ordinated multiple string picking.

In case anyone wants to wander off topic on an off topic subject for a second and relive that incredible scene in the movie deliverance that shows what a gifted banjo player can do alongside a good guitar player have a look.
The footage itself isn't marvelous but the sound is good.

About 18 months ago I discovered that youtube is a treasure trove for videos of musical performances. Some are just music videos ala MTV (I am not of the MTV generation so those usually don't do much for me ), but there are also many live performances. Unfortunately, the video/audio quality is nowhere near as good as that video DK posted a few months ago that showed him playing a guitar he was planning to sell. In the future, youtube will probably have much better quality though. By the way, sort of related, I am almost finished reading Planet Google now and it is a very interesting new book -- related because Google bought youtube when youtube cleaned their clock on video and showed them how to do it. I have found some really cool videos from John Prine, Steve Earle, Joe Ely, Johnny Cash, Rosanne Cash, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, and many others.

Some great names there Henry, one would think that they would be safely locked down under contract etc. just shows that nothing escapes the net thesedays, I must have a bit of a look myself, when I get a minute.

How about a five level system:

1. No other photos permitted
2. Edits only
3. Related photos only and edits by permission
4. No squirrels or indoor sports
5. All photos welcome

Right you are! But I agree with Henry in that it helps quite a bit if the OP makes clear his intentions for the thread. It's not exactly a matter of "ownership," but initiating a thread should involve some forethought.

No landscapes? what about Murph's sheepses as a case in point, what classification do they fall into, a couple of those were landscapish and they were good value, got everyones greymatter ticking over those did.
So I reckon...
1. Landscapes ok (if there is a sheep somewhere in it)
2. Squirrels (permission only, but birds are ok anytime)
3. Not free for all unless otherwise stated. (OP must give the go ahead)

This rings fairly true...Post something extremely difficult to get like good fish shots, good indoor sports shots, great concert shots, or hot chicks with nice expressions captured on the street or anywhere else and you won't find many here with the ability post follow-up captures.

In-fact, no offense intended, but I have seen very few good concert shots, almost no good sports photos, and other than Henry, I, and a couple others posting I don't see many able to follow decent street peep captures around here either. Lots of seascapes, landscapes, and a few standing bird shots, but to be honest that's about it.
