Check this out:

Hmm, maybe that is why I was able to avoid getting eaten when I was there in 1995. :-)

By the way, I am quite sure that the mummy in the photo in this article is the same one that I have 3 photos of in my West Papua New Guinea (Irian Jaya) gallery on my website:

It was at a small village in the Baliem Valley and they said it was the 500 year old headman of the village.

Maybe that's why all my friends have made it back alive. I have friends who have lived and worked on both sides of the island in the villages, some since '57. One of my friends was instrumental in breaking the taboo on twins. On the PNG side, at least, the second twin was always killed at birth because it was '"evil". I believe it was that they thought it would share the same spirit in two bodies, or only one would have a spirit, something like that. He convinced the parents to let them both live for a why just to check it out, and after a while they decided there was no harm in having twins. It soon caught on to other villages, too.

I didn't see any Japanese when I was there in 1995. Why? They knew to avoid the place or maybe all had already been eaten? Here is my trip report:

Penis sheaths to be banned in Papua police crackdown?

Politicians in Indonesia have clashed with natives from Papua New Guinea - after declaring that their penis sheaths are offensive and pornographic.

Decorative 'koteka' have been worn by male inhabitants of New Guinea to cover their manhood for centuries.

The sheath is normally made from a dried out gourd made of a type of pumpkin, and is tied both around the scrotum and the chest to hold it in place.

Do their Moms warn them they could poke an eye out with those things?

Interesting news Henry. I wonder why they found "koteka" offensive and that too now?
