Every time I try to read one of David's articles on this site, I get an annoying square advertisement on the left-hand side of the page that covers up some of David's text. There doesn't seem to be any way to move or delete the ad in order to read the text. Is this happening on other people's computers also, and if so, has anyone found a way to deal with these annoying ads? I would rather read what David has to say than guess what might be hidden by the ad. Regardless of whether this is intentional or some kind of technical glitch, the advertisers are shooting themselves in the foot with these ads, as there is no way I would ever click on an ad that is annoying the hell out of me.

I get the same with the Google ads covering text using IE and Firefox on a Vista PC. I get round it by resizing the window and moving the text up or down. If we could get David off using Macs we wouldn't get these problems.

That large ad should not be there. I am trying to fix the settings now to prevent it appearing. The ads are all supposed to be sized to fit the sidebar.

I looked at several articles, David, and the ads now all fit the sidebars on my laptop using IE or Firefox. Thanks for fixing this.

I think there is a good argument not to block ads here. I'm sure David finds the (little) revenue helpful towards the costs of running this site.

Yes, it produces about £1 a day which covers hosting costs - unfortunately, the site is for reading, and that means ads get VERY few clicks compared with sites that don't have readable content! Apparently you can get the highest clicks by just doing a blank site and stacking ads on it.

Makes me think of one of the worst kind of websites. Those ones who make pages of nothing part part numbers things. Like they get dumps of electronic catalogs or ACR scan things in or something. But the whole thing is nothing but worthless list of part numbers with nothing but the number.

All they do is making searching for stuff all but impossible. I hate those sites so much!

Thank you! There are several websites that I go to that sometimes cause the browser to lock up for any where from 5 seconds to 30 seconds because of banner ads. I just installed this addon in Firefox and now the sites load and don't lock up the browser!

I'm using Adblock Plus with the EasyList USA block list.

For a long time I was using a proxy with manual configuration. Then when I got ADSL I was not so bothered and in any case some non-profilt sites do benefit from a little advertising.

But IMBD put me over the edge with full screen popups so I had to install this to get around it.

Most of the blockers allow you to disable blocking for specific sites should you wish to.

For reasons I cannot rationally explain, the little pop-up box in DK's posts that tell me my IP/ISP/Computer and Browser really annoy me. Feels like snooping. Why is it there and who benefits ? Can I disable it ?

As for DK using a Mac...............don't all right-thinking folk ? PC's are so yesterday.

Yes, we arrived in Tokyo on Tuesday and will start traveling using our rail passes on Monday. Met an old friend last night and we went to an izakaya in Ginza for beers and shochu.

I stopped by the big Bic Camera near the west exit of Shinjuku station on Wednesday just for a quick look. Looked at and played with the A900, Pentax K7, Canon 7D, Nikon D700, Nikon D3x, Canon 1DsIII, Panasonic GH1, Panasonic GF1, Olympus E-P1, Canon G11, Sony A380, and probably a few more that I don't recall. With the terrible exchange rate right now I don't expect to be buying anything though.

Having only recently moved from a Pc to a Mac, I'm disappointed I didn't hang on a few months, what an innovation . Thanks for sharing Henry.
