DK's signature on all of his posts sports a sign which, according to the Danasoft.com website, shows the configuration of the viewer's kit and connection.

However my view says I'm using Vista (correct) and IE7 (not correct, its IE8).

I know it's trivial but I was curious if there is an explanation?

Bet you they forgot to change a line or two of code which identifies IE - I don't where else it would get the report from.

are you running IE8 in "Compatibility view"?

I still don't get it. That signature shows what I am using and from where... what for? I already know that.
It is as if someone writes his own name on a piece of paper and puts in his pocket in case... he forgets his name...

The DANAsig is just a thing which is fun. Actually, if you have a dynamic IP it can help you now when your IP has been changed - ISP servers restarted, etc

Actually, with each request for a page your browser sends oodles of information to the webserver. It's just reformatting it and sending it back to you.

It could even determine what language you've set in your browser (http-accept-language) and then answer in the same language (though it doesn't, just tried). You also send with each request what page you've been to before (referrer). You can use this e.g. to stop deep linking by third parties (linking to a page deep in your site without passing via the main page). Lot's of stuff happening behind our backs, watch out!

Each time IE8 launches I have to manually activate compatibility view, if I want it. I don't often bother, and especially here, as it makes no difference. With Dyxum it does make a big difference as the columns are all squashed over to the right initially.

compatibility view will make the browser report to the site as IE7 which is why DK's sign shows what it does.

For me, it's a creepy thing to see.

I hate seeing anything that reminds me of how you are not anonymous on the internet. It's a sign telling me the internet knows to much.

IP address an so forth is the things you can't avoid. You can do your best to do the usual things, like not posting your name, addresses, personal info, job, etc, plus making stuff up for good measure, but in the end, things can be traced back to an IP address which can be figured out were you are or who you are via your ISP provider.

Shot by Richard using the 24-70mm new Sigma HSM on the D3. We were just showing how very wide 24mm really is in the studio. Even 70mm is wide for portraits. It was one of two shots - 70mm and 24mm - Richie did for an article. Most of the others look far too serious.
