New Canon G11 has REDUCED MP sensor compared to G10

News item on dpreview http://www.dpreview.com/news/0908/09081908canong11.asp details the new Canon G11 and its 10mp sensor (compared to its predecessors 14mp). Have we finally seen the end of the mp race in compacts, with manufacturers concentrating on image quality?

Shocking really, didn't expect that at all.
Shame the video didn't get a HD makeover though.
And the VF less S90 looks a bit lame in today's market

I'm rather happy I have my G10. I don't know that I expect any major benefits from the retro grade, I've been happy with the G10.

But even if the G11 pans out to be an improvement, Canon took a big step back with the screen. I don't like moving screens. So I'm happy with the G10. The only condition the screen has any benefit is self portrait stuff. As you can hold the camera at any position in the back hemisphere and see the screen just fine.

The moving screen gives the new model some appeal independent of its "retro grade" sensor, which might otherwise confuse many customers. Some conspicuous consumers may buy it for the articulating screen and be tricked into getting better low-light performance.

Also, the articulated screen means a new vulnerability in addition to new utility. If it ends the camera's life early for some, they'll probably go buy another one because there's just not many other cameras like it. Smart move on Canon's part.
