That's a good photo indeed. I like the graphical intersections of the lines in that composition as well. Good choice!

I haven't received my copy yet, but if David is a winner then hip hip hurray. Congratulations... but I won't celebrate that with a cup of home distilled fruit-vodka yet, till I read it myself.

Yes, congratulations!

Thanks folks! The truth is that I put 12 entries in because my company had not sponsored an award this year (we normally sponsor something like Overseas Press or Industrial), I had time, I wanted to put something into the system (fees for the entries), and having not entered any awards for 30 years I also felt curious to learn what scores my work would get. It's very difficult dealing with a professional association as an editor, so many of the people whose pictures I have to choose/reject are multiple award winners.

So, it does help me in that sense. I have (anonymously) submitted work to my association's annual awards, and won one of the categories and some merits. That places me on the same level (in my field, editorial) as the people I have to deal with.

It's too late to help me in career terms! I have to remember, I'm three years off turning sixty. I did my best press work when I was 23-24; I can claim to have had double page spread features in the Sunday Times, magazine covers, long photo essays in specialist magazines and things like that but it was nearly all around that time. My work was very similar to the winning picture; I used wide-angles a lot, and covered arts, architecture, environment, design, industry, business, education, technology. That award would have been a great thing to have at the beginning of a career.

But - even then, you could not earn a living doing it. My first Sunday Times feature when I was 23 had one picture used 11 columns wide and four pictures with it. I received £52. That was about one week's staff pay for someone just out of college, first year first job. And it took a week to do the story, plus making 20-30 prints, two visits to London, two or three hundred miles of travel to the subject. That is why I only did it for a couple of years, you had to be utterly dedicated to becoming a photojournalist and earning a decent living came second.

Well done DK! Well deserved I think. When it reaches the appropriate hour of the day I will lift a glass (single malt obviously) in celebration.

If there were also awards for international photo clubs then I am sure you would be scooping up more gongs. Photoclubalpha is a rarely acknowledged additional "feature" for Minolta/Sony equipment, and one that I would seriously miss if I were to change brands.

I hope that this reconginition provides some incentive for Sony to recognise your work in supporting the Alpha mount. At the very least getting you review copies of equipment early. There must be a very large number of people across the globe who wait to see "DK" at the bottom of a review article before making a final decision.

I must say I'm impressed, and I don't empress easily.
I remember when you posted that image of the wire artwork a while ago David, I made some remark about the artwork itself, to the effect that at least nobody can break in and steal that baby....well, not unless they pinch the entire south wing. little did I realize I was being flippant in the presence of greatness. (I guess I didn't 'get' it, the artwork I mean, but it does seem to grow on one, over time, even though I still don't really 'get' it), tis' an excellent photo though.
