You get a nag screen on non Canon batteries
When I had a D7000 there were no third party batteries available due to some kind of encryption, though if you have a grip you could power the camera via AA cells
I've used quite a lot of batteries from various makers the worst thing that happens is you get poor performance or they don't last as long. Never really encountered a "danger" element to any camera batteries. Scaremongering I think
